Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 2, and this is your Morning Chalk Up. Did we miss something? Send us a tip at email@example.com.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I’d trip her. Oh, I’d pick her up and brush her off and say, ‘Sorry, Mom,’ but nobody beats me.” – Leo Durocher
THE COMPETITION FLOOR
When to watch the US Olympic Weightlifting team compete in Rio.
Tia-Clair Toomey like you’ve never seen her before.
The 2015 CrossFit Games Gets Nominated, Twice — The CrossFit Games have been nominated by the readers of SportsTravel for two SportsTravel awards, including the Best Professional Multi-Discipline / Multi-Sport Event and Best Sports Event of the Year. In order to win, CrossFit needs your help by casting your ballot before August 15.
Building the Games — The CrossFit Games wouldn’t be the same without the kind of contraptions that Rogue works with CrossFit to develop. On the main display this year were the worm, Zeus and Athena rigs, the weighted jump rope, and the three-person deadlift bar. So how far out does the planning start for these new contraptions? At the athlete dinner before the start of the Games, Dave Castro said that some of these things are years in the making. Rogue put together a series of videos showcasing the new equipment and highlighted the making of a few of them here – Murph is our favorite.
WHAT THE ELITE ATHLETES ARE UP TO — Sam Briggs gave blood and reminded us why it’s so important to donate. Daniel Tyminski celebrated his seventh year anniversary of being sober! “It’s been 7 years since the last time I used and had a sip of alcohol…I was a waste of existence and I knew I had to make a change Again, like every year; if it wasn’t for CrossFit and opening my affiliate, I would not be where I am today!!!” Katrin Davidsdottir brags about beating Cole Sager in a hill sprint. Photos from Annie Thorisdottir’s hike through the Grand Canyon. Brooke Wells made her hair pretty and so does Maddy Curley. Emily Bridgers is back to coaching.
IN 2 MINUTES…
After CrossFit Unbridled heard about Elizabeth Payton’s stage 4 colon cancer, they hosted a 30 minute burpee challenge donating money for every burpee completed in a half hour. 20 participants raised $2,000 for a family they didn’t even know. SPOILER ALERT: Jordan Rodgers becomes the bachelor to the bachelorette and Noah Ohlsen wants to do a double date. Dave Castro is getting back in to some handgun shooting matches.
HEALTH, MOBILITY & MERCH
Last chance to sign up for a 2016 Reebok Ragnar Relay and receive a $100 Reebok gift card.
Merging Weightlifting and Powerlifting — Hayden Bowe didn’t intend to be a powerlifter. But when he tore his patellar tendon last year, Bowe, a national-level weightlifter, had a slow recovery and wasn’t able to snatch or clean and jerk for months…Bowe’s friend convinced him to try a powerlifting competition. “When I went back to weightlifting…I immediately hit PRs in snatch and clean and jerk, which were lifts I hadn’t done in six months.” And the Hybrid Performance Method was officially born.
