CHALK UP READS

Ten years ago, a Colorado woman was burned on nearly 90 percent of her body. She was an oil well pumper working a natural gas well in Wyoming in 2007, when it malfunctioned and ignited. Today, she is an inspiration, helping other burn survivors recover.

But Shannon Kelley defied the odds. She has a horse ranch with her husband in Leader and tackles CrossFit three times a week even after the natural gas well malfunction set both a building and Kelley on fire.

“Becoming Brute: Cazayoux on Fear, Addiction and Finding Purpose” by Athlete Daily

It was May 2009 when Brute Strength co-founder Michael Cazayoux tried heroin for the first time.He was just six months shy of being out of rehab, a running race that kept him on track already in his rearview mirror. It was so easy to slip back into habits, years of alcohol, opioids and cocaine that started in high school and prompted his parents to send him to the first of three different treatment facilities in Utah.

By the end of the week, Cazayoux had racked up $5,000 in debt. If this wasn’t rock bottom, it was certainly headed there.

CHALK UP AFFILIATES

TAKE THE SURVEY: Box owners, we’re super curious to hear the story behind your affiliate name. Tell us how you came up with your name and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition.

Fun Fact: Only three and a half years ago, the second affiliate in China opened its doors. China now has 120 boxes.

For Coaches: Ben Bergeron’s segment on practical ways to show your athletes you care.

Owners of the only three CrossFit Affiliates in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson, Missouri area share why they think CrossFit is growing in their community: “It’s the only workout I’ve ever seen results from and stuck with, because I saw those results. Everything else I’ve tried is boring, repetitive. If it’s so boring that I need headphones to distract me and I’m not seeing results, what’s the point?”
