There Are Only Two Left

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition was chalked up while doing copious amounts of ROMWOD.

17.4 LIVE

WHAT’S GOING DOWN?

Welcome to Mexico City for the live announcement of 17.4. Tonight at 5PM Pacific, the sixth Fittest Woman in the world, Brooke Wells, is taking on the fittest woman in Mexico, Brenda Castro. After three Open events, Brooks sits in 11th and Brenda in 27th.

FUN FACT: This is the first time an athlete from Latin America has been featured on a live Open announcement.

HOW DO I WATCH LIVE?

The livestream begins at 5PM Pacific and you can watch it on YouTube or Facebook. Round 4 of Ro vs Boz will stream on Facebook shortly after the cool down show.

THE WORKOUT

Dave Castro released this hint on Tuesday. We don’t know what the workout will be, obviously, but we here’s what we do know:

FUN FACT #1: There has been a repeat in every Open except for 2011, the first year.

FUN FACT #2: There has only been one movement repeated in the same year; bar facing burpees in 16.1 and 16.5.

FUN FACT #3: Thrusters have been in every Open and they’ve showed up in the final workout as a couplet.

FUN FACT #4: Without repeating a movement, that leaves only 16.4, 15.5, and 11.3 as options. 11.1 qualifies as a technical repeat, but it’s already been repeated before as 14.1.

OUR GUESS: If there’s a repeat this week, it will be 16.4 because it’s a chipper and it includes zero repeated movements. If it’s a repeat next week, it will be 15.5. But our guess is, there won’t be a true repeat this year.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX

CrossFit’s newest documentary, Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness will be released on iTunes tomorrow. Beyond the Whiteboard released their full analysis of how athletes performed on 17.3 worldwide, and less than 2% of Rx’d individual competitors made it to the 245/175 pound round and less than 1% made it to the 265/185 pound. ROMWOD socks were spotted on someone riding a camel in Morocco. Brooke Wells was lifting live on the CrossFit Games Facebook page yesterday. You can win a free pair of Reebok Nanos if you drink a FitAid out of your old Nanos.

WHAT TO SHOW YOUR FRIEND WHO’S WANTS A CUTE PREGNANCY PIC…

This couple at CrossFit Campo Belo in São Paulo, Brazil decided to they wanted something simple and beautiful, taken in a place where they spend their time together, the box.

CHALK UP READS

I love seeing missed lifts on social media.

Truly, I do.

I’ll scroll through 10 PR’s or impressive feats without stopping, but when I see someone truly grind, sweat and push with everything they have —only to fail— I don’t hesitate to give it a like.

I like the refreshing honesty and the guts of a missed lift, of watching how an athlete reacts to failure. Anyone who has been doing powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, CrossFit, etc. knows how frustrating the line can be between a miss and a mark. Between first and second, or not placing at all.
