QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I didn’t want to try because I didn’t want to fail. I got married, had a couple of kids, went to grad school, bought a house, and got fatter. I topped out at 310 and totally gave up. I gave zero point zero zero f***s about myself anymore. I wanted to hide and be invisible.” — Shane Kingery

CROSSFIT 2018: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

What happened?

After the Invitational, Dave Castro announced some new changes coming to the CrossFit Games in 2018.

Teams will be reduced from six athletes to four, which really stinks if you’re Tasia Percevecz — CrossFit Mayhem’s newest athlete who just announced she was joining Mayhem last week.

New Regionals.

South America will be getting their own Regional, but only one spot at the CrossFit Games. Europe will be broken into two Regions: North and South. North will be mainland Europe and send five athletes to the Games. South includes the Middle East and Africa and sends four athletes.

Canada West, West and California regions will be combined into one.

Anything Else?

This one got lost in hype of the big changes, but Castro said this wasn’t the last time we’ll see a handstand obstacle course.

There will be nine regional events instead of eight. Otherwise, there will still be 40 individual athletes competing at the CrossFit Games.

Webb

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to tell your friend who’s about to give up…

You’re not alone. Meet Shane, who’s bare-all Facebook post went viral last week and he graciously allowed us to repost. Shane had given up trying to lose weight. He’d been fat his whole life so he decided he’d just continue to be fat until he died. If you’ve ever struggled with weight loss, ever given up on anything, or just want to know what’s going through the mind of someone who is, then read this and share with a friend who needs to know that it can be done.

What to tell your friend who noticed something strange going on with their kids…

There must be something in the water. Or perhaps it’s all that CrossFit they’ve been doing at CrossFit Vivid in Emerald, Australia. Kids from ages 5 – 17 pile in a few times a week for dedicated CrossFit Kids classes for each age group. “We’ve had parents comment on how much their kids have improved in their other sport,” said Gayle Kruger, one of the CrossFit Vivid coaches.

CHALK UP READS

“Overweight? You Need to Read This” by Kai Rainey, CrossFit Journal

The average month has 720 hours, and I wasted a lot of them in my life.

My diet was trash, and my health was in a steep decline and growing exponentially worse with each passing month.

No one would have accused me of being addicted to fitness at 42 and over 300 lb.—officially morbidly obese, with a BMI of 49.9. It was painful to walk, and I usually didn’t. When we stopped at the grocery store, I would wait in the car. Painful hip joints, painful knees, plantar fasciitis and minimal capacity to breathe all dictated a sedentary life. I could see the future: I knew I would be on a mobility device in the next few years, and I knew my quality of life would continue its downward trend.

I had paraded binge diet after binge diet through my life for most of three decades. Lose 30, gain 40. Lose 70, gain 100. Lose 3, eat an entire pizza.

The first day I saw the sign for CrossFit Fixx, in Tucson, I was hoping it was a new restaurant.
