Froning and Fraser are teaming up

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition is powered by nuyu sleep, the best way to help your body relax, so you can improve your sleep quality. Nuyu works with your body’s natural circadian rhythm so you get a better night’s sleep.  They can’t make you sleep more but they can make the sleep you do get better.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“If you sit back and spend too much time feeling good about what you did in the past, you’re going to come up short next time.” — New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick

SMASHING PUMPKINS

I love 90’s music.

No, no. Not the Smashing Pumpkins as in the 90’s hit rock band.  We’re talking literal smashed pumpkins, like the kind you tell your kids not to do even though you remember doing it yourself.

What happened?

Reebok CrossFit One’s Connor Murphy brought out his sledge hammer to fulfill every teenage boy’s Halloween fantasy of wrecking havoc on the neighbor’s pumpkins. But instead of getting in trouble, he got himself a Guiness World Record by smashing 30 pumpkins in 60 seconds.

Pretty impressive.

Yeah, we’ll say. Connor joins the growing list of CrossFit athletes breaking Guiness or other world records, like the 44 records that were broke over two days last February. And don’t forget Erin Lavoie, who owns Predation CrossFit, and is the current World Record holder for chopping down the most trees in two minutes.

We wonder which holiday will be next.

CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES

Mattie Rogers in an Eleiko infomercial ahead of the IWF World Championships — “We all have different lives and face different battles, but being strong is being strong. It’s staying true to who you are and what you believe and chasing what you want, full force. Strength has no gender, it has no standard. For me strong is happy.”

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to tell your friend who just invited you for some pick-up basketball…

Who are we playing against? Rich Froning and Mathew Fraser are teaming up for some worldwide fitness fun: “Froning/Fraser vs. the world,” and you’ll have 48 hours to grab a partner and do the WOD. That’s all we know, that and it will be painful.

What to tell your friend who’s freaking out about the holidays…

We get it. Holiday eating can be stressful, especially if you’re not doing the cooking and can’t control the recipes. Thankfully Working Against Gravity put together this macro-friendly holiday menu guide to help you stay healthy even when the table is littered with every kind of pie imaginable. Plus they share some personal tips on overcoming social anxiety and family induced stress that will keep you from raiding the liquor closet on Day 1.

THINGS TO…

WHAT’S UP DOC?

HEAR: Modern Mamas with Girls Gone WOD

Joe and Clair take a break from their own podcast to join the Modern Mamas for an episode discussing Claire’s motherhood and journey, including her struggles with postpartum depression and the pressures Joy has felt to have children even when that’s not her path.

TUNE IN.

EAT: Shrimp Avocado Salal with Lime Vinaigrette

Lime and cilantro bring a zesty kick to this avocado-filled salad. With the light taste of shrimp combined with avocados, tomatoes and red onion, you can enjoy this salad as an appetizer or a light lunch. Easily sub out the shrimp for another fish or chicken.

MAKE ENOUGH FOR TWO PLEASE.

STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?

“In April 2016, I went to the doctor for some routine work. To my surprise the doctor told me I was obese! To top it off at age 37, my doctor told me my cholesterol was the worst he had seen in years. I was determined to change those two things. So I started a 6-week challenge at Twice Bitten CrossFit. During that time I lost around 30 pounds and my cholesterol is now in a good range. My doctor was shocked that it changed that much by diet and CrossFit!” — Casey Joe Oliver, Twice Bitten CrossFit in Oklahoma City, OK

“When a Cop Trains a Convict” by Andréa Maria Cecil, CrossFit Journal

Savino Sedano was a kid when he started delivering drugs. Pedaling his bike around Long Beach, California, he’d drop off brown paper bags all over town.

“I didn’t even know what I was delivering,” he said. He was distributing narcotics. By eighth grade, Sedano had started a drug-selling business.

“I’ve been doing it ever since. I mean, through high school, all the way till, like, 35,” said the now-39-year-old. “I’ve been to prison. I never stopped. I was really addicted to that fast-money lifestyle. Especially back home. There’s gangs. My neighborhood wasn’t really the best, so it was (the) type of environment I (adapted) to. And now I’m away from that and I’ve had time to reflect, and, actually, I don’t know, it’s like I’m free now. I was like a slave.”

Sedano is a prisoner at Rankin County Detention Center in Brandon, Mississippi. There, he’s served three-and-a-half years of a five-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance.

Unbeknownst to him, he started CrossFit in June at the prison under the tutelage of a deputy sheriff who also owns a local CrossFit affiliate. Sedano’s change has been profound.
