QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Failed? Good. You learned.” — Comp Train

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD CROSSFIT PHENOM

Who dat?

Prisais, aka “Princess P”, is a four-year-old CrossFitter who just might smoke you in the gym.

Her dad, James Townsend, is a former Chicago Bears wide receiver turned CrossFitter and co-affiliate owner of Autumo CrossFit with Lindsey Valenzuela.

Her stats.

Growing up with a gym-owner dad, she spends a lot of time around the box. She began swinging from the rings and doing push-ups when she was only 12-months-old. Now, at four, she’s doing 55 pound deadlifts, handstand push-ups, L-sits, pull-ups, and box jumps. And she recently started taking gymnastics. Being in the gym is just her fav.

Her future.

With a growing social media following, this tiny little Californian has a bright future ahead, but not everyone’s on board. Back in November 2017, a video of Prisais back squatting 55 pounds went absolutely viral, being viewed almost 2 million times and causing quite the stir. Like we’re talking ‘big deal’ folks, with parents up in arms all over the Internets. It doesn’t seem to have slowed them down tho.

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to tell your friend who never has enough time for lunch…

How does a week’s worth of lunches in two hours sound? We thought so. Bon Appétit’s food author Chris Morocco is doing you a solid and walking through how he preps five meals in just two hours on Sunday. So grab your iPad, throw on “Fittest on Earth” for some background noise and get reppin and preppin.

What to share with your friend who’s not sure how to start CrossFit…

Share CrossFit HQ’s “How to Start CrossFit” guide, including everything from tracking down an affiliate nearby, movement demos, a directory of personal trainers, and frequenty asked questions.

What to tell your friend who’s tired of using Insta for weight loss ideas…

Join the club. If you’re serious about losing weight and finding the fittest you, the social media fitness highlight reel — A.K.A. Instagram — might not be the best fit. Sure, it’s packed with loads of inspiring “I want those abs” pics and motivations quotes, but #LezzBeHonest you’re only adding to that jealous-o-meter. Quartz journalist and PhD researcher on Internet nutrition communities,Tim Squirrell, spent two and a half years “studying the social dynamics of internet fitness and nutrition communities” (especially the paleo crowd) for his PhD thesis. He found that Reddit’s myriad diet communities are far better at “actively working to understand what works and why,” and it’s
that culture of skepticism that keeps fad diets away from this community. It’s a little long of a read, but worth it if you’re into self-diagnosing and online nutrition.

“Pregnancy: Perspectives for Trainers” by Emily Beers, CrossFit Journal

“It’s OK to stay fit during pregnancy—but not too fit.”

That seems to be the message society puts out to pregnant women.

Take, for example, a video posted by 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games competitor Miranda Chivers Oldroyd in early March. Nineteen weeks pregnant, she performed an effortless bar muscle-up as part of CrossFit Games Open Workout 17.2. Oldroyd included in her post what can only be interpreted as a pre-emptive strike against the criticism she knew would follow:

“Do I advise this for other pregnant ladies? For the most part—probably not. But after a decade of CrossFit and a lifetime PR of 20 (unbroken) reps not that long ago—1 rep every 20 seconds felt perfectly safe and right for me and my family!” Oldroyd wrote.

Still, people felt the need to judge and criticize her training decisions:

“Why though? I’m all for fit pregnancies but this is getting ridiculous, there is just no need for this except for selfish reasons.”
