QUOTE OF THE DAY

Every morning a gazelle wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be eaten. At the same time a lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. The moral of the story is, whether you’re a gazelle or a lion, when you wake up you’d better be hauling ass.” — Unknown

GETTIN PAID TO WOD

Say what?

How are those 2018 resolutions going? Could you use a little more incentive? We know money talks, so we may just have the solution to keep you on the straight and narrow for month number two — some good ‘ol greenbacks.

You talking Benjamins?

Of the digital kind, and no it’s not some weird scam. It’s called Sweatcoin: an app that tracks your steps each day and converts them into a digital currency you can actually spend.

The app (available on Android and iOS devices) uses GPS to track your movement throughout the day. The downside of using GPS technology is that your treadmill steps won’t count and it could be hell on your battery life — but it is a huge plus for the running enthusiast or those whose daily commute is by foot.

Pay up.

You can use your Sweatcoins to purchase things like anti-gravity yoga classes, Hello Fresh gift cards, and even the new iPhone X.

Sounds like you might wanna stop avoiding those running WODs from now on.

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

How we know everyone is a little stressed about the Open…

Because when you post the wrong dumbbell weight, you get a lot of panicked replies. Yesterday, we inaccurately wrote that the dumbbell weights for the Open would be 30 pounds for the women. The correct weight is 35 pounds. Sorry for the confusion! Please don’t hate us.

What to tell your friend who just found out Netflix and chill doesn’t mean what they thought it did…

No one told Jacob Heppner that. If you have no idea what you’re talking about, read this.

What to tell your friend who’s getting tired of eggs…

Get creative. Just cause you’re dialing in your nutrition doesn’t mean you need to go over easy three meals a day. Take a classic eggless spin on a breakfast skillet by mixing chicken and butternut squash together with spices and veggies. Or try one of these four other ways to mix it up.

THINGS TO…

WATCH: Jacob Heppner

A man known for two things: never wearing a shirt ever, and doing more WODs in one day than you’ll do all week — not joking. The guy did the entire 2017 Regionals in one day and scored better than most did over three days. FloElite flew up to hang for a day as he trains to return to the CrossFit Games after taking a season to recover.

MEET JACOB.

HEAR: Kirsten Pedri and Grandma Betty

If you don’t know Grandma Betty then you’re in for a treat. Games athlete Kristen Pedri has been training her 97-year-old grandma to help her improve her overall health and fitness. She’s now able to walk without a cane and is seeing improvements across the board in her health.

MEET GRANDMA BETTY.

KNOW: How Often to Wash Your Hair After WODs

You just wrapped up a 20 minute grinder and you’re drenched. You hop in the shower and the first thing you do is reach for the shampoo to wash off the 9 layers of sweat you just accumulated. But before you do, here are some tips for keeping those locks healthy and hydrated.

HERE’S A TIP.

EAT: Chocolate Avocado Pudding

This recipe combines your two favorite foods in the world into one holy grail snack. Even better, RP Strength demoes how to make it on video so you can easily follow along. Velvety smooth, creamy, rich, and chocolatey.

TASTES LIKE CHOCOLATE.

BUY: New Shorts for the Open

When there’s only one review that’s not five stars you know there’s something good here. Barbell Apparel’s Ghost shorts stay out of the way while you WOD and right now they’re 10% off with code “CHALKUP.”

CHALK UP COMMUNITY

  • FOR LITTLE FRITZ — At just 10-months-old, Fritz was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Disorder, a fatal genetic disorder leading to progressive muscle degeneration. It’s uncurable though physical therapy can help re-build weak muscles, but living beyond 30 is rare. Fritz’s parents started a non-profit to raise awareness and help fund research for a cure, and Lindsey Valenzuela is hosting a fundraiser WOD to support the family.
  • NORTHSTAR — Laurie and Kurtis Bowler, co-owners of Rainier CrossFit — one of the first CrossFit affiliates ever opened — are spearheading a new community project to bring meaningful employment to disabled adults in their community. They’re building a farm that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can work under the supervision of occupational therapists and health workers. The project is BIG and it’s gonna take the whole community to help them achieve it.
  • GETTING SERIOUS — CrossFit Invictus just inked a deal with Thorne, a health and tech company known for their nutritional science and testing to optimize performance through nutrition. Thorne will now be supplying Invictus with all their nutritional supplements and opening their diagnostic labs to measure athletes’ performance to address deficiencies.

“Beyond Expectations: How Two Men Hope to Change the World” by Athlete Daily

Logan Aldridge was 13 years old when a freak accident wakeboarding with his family resulted in amputating his left arm. Rather than feel sorry for himself the then-teenager —who remembers crying just once over being an amputee—dove into using his platform to help others. His mother arranged for Aldridge to speak to Wells Fargo at 14, an event that snowballed and eventually lead to him working with a marketing agency.

That’s where the idea for Beyond Expectations, the Logan Aldridge Charitable Foundation came about.

“I learned a lot about expectations and about how they are just pre-existing standards that are set,” said Aldridge, who made countless inspirational speeches as a teen. “A lot of times those expectations limit our potential. You have to work past them.”

But as Aldridge entered high school and went through college, the website and foundation took a backseat to academics and a social life.

When Aldridge, now 26, found CrossFit four years ago he noticed there was another more-urgent platform for him: advancing the growth and inclusion of adaptive athletes.
