QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The habit of winning comes from the good habits instilled on the practice field. What happens in a game on Sunday is almost always determined by what you do the previous Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.” –– Tom Coughlin

GAS STATION FITNESS.

The problem.

By 2030, there are expected to be more than 71 million autonomous vehicles on the road. So what’s going to happen to the tens of thousands of service stations around the country once gasoline isn’t as much of a necessity?

Get pumped.

Reebok and global architecture and design firm Gensler have concocted a novel concept to solve this problem, which they’ve cleverly named “Get Pumped”. The idea is to reinvent existing gas stations across the country as Fitness Hubs — so you can fuel up with a quick WOD or a meditative recharge while on the road.

Austin Malleolo, head of Reebok fitness facilities said, “This design work with Gensler allows us to imagine a future where there is zero barrier to entry for an opportunity to work out and be healthy. Consumers may not need gas stations anymore, but instead of wasting them, we’re recycling them, and maximizing the space so that they become places of community.”

The deets.

The concept includes three different types of facilities: The Network, where major interstate rest stops can be converted into full re-fueling stations including CrossFit and spinning classes. The Oasis, which focuses on mental and physical rest and includes farm to table offerings and juice bars. And The Community Center, where folks can recharge electric cars, attend nutrition classes, and even get in a quick pop-up CrossFit WOD.

Ok, we’re pumped.

Sounds rad, right? While this may be tiny seed of a concept right now, with companies like Reebok and Gensler behind the wheel, this may just be our future reality.

“I Owe It to Myself to Get Well” by Mike Koslap, CrossFit Journal

Al Sagapolutele was always the “big guy.” As a result of poor eating and drinking habits, he weighed as much as 485 lb. after college.

A few years ago, Sagapolutele suffered a heart attack, and treatment left him with three stents. He also had sciatic nerve pain, a herniated disk and spinal stenosis in two parts of his lower lumbar region. After multiple doctors told him he needed to lose weight, a desperate Sagapolutele saw a gastric-bypass surgeon. When a good friend questioned whether Sagapolutele had done everything possible to lose the weight naturally, Sagapolutele admitted he hadn’t.

A year and a half ago, Sagapolutele started one-on-one sessions with Dorian Shockey, owner of CrossFit Resurgens in Atlanta, Georgia. Though Sagapolutele had tried other gyms in the past, this was like talking to a friend, he said. He eventually progressed to the affiliate’s beginners course, then regular classes.

More than anything, Sagapolutele was struck by the sense of community and supportive atmosphere at CrossFit Resurgens.
