Instead of being intimidated by someone who is stronger, faster, or more fit than you, be inspired.” — Unknown

NITRO COLD BREW JUST GOT EVER BETTER

No, it’s true.

We all love a good cup of coffee and we’re always looking for ways to upgrade the experience. That’s where nitro cold brew initially made its debut. You know the stuff.

Cold brew is low in acid and super smooth already, but infuse it with nitrogen and it gets a sexy makeover. The addition of nitrogen makes a super creamy, thick, frothy cup of joe that doesn’t need any extra frills.

Morning power-up.

Well Caveman Coffee totally upped the ante. They’re introducing their nitro cold brew IN A CAN (something about canning beverages that just makes people go wild, like canned wine).

The best part about this is that you’ll be able to indulge in a cup from the comfort of your couch without ever stepping foot into a coffee shop.

Tell me more.

Caveman Coffee is a company founded by competitive athletes and they made their mark in the paleo world with products like 100% Coconut MCT Oil and Organic Cacao Butter (bulletproof coffee, anyone?). They know their way around a coffee bean and just continue to make us swoon.

How can I get some?

This new product comes in adorable 8 ounce cans and is the ONLY single origin canned nitro cold brew available in the country. And they just dropped yesterday

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to tell your friend who has no idea what to do with their day now that the CrossFit Open is over…

We feel ya. But the next stage in the competition is only 52 days away; that’s seven weeks and three days for you non-calendar majors. So while you wait, here’s how you can grab tickets to Regionals, and here are eight things which are all the Open feels right now.

CHALK UP COMMUNITY

  • NOT BROKEN — A near-fatal car accident 15-years-ago shattered Lauren Hoyt-Loy’s dreams of playing college in soccer. Three years ago, she decided to join CrossFit Praus in Fort Wayne, IN and has re-discovered her love for fitness.
  • LIFT FOR THE 22 — O’Hare CrossFit in Chicago, IL is partnering with Lift for the 22, an organization that uses fitness to help prevent veteran suicides. The fundraiser WOD will pay for year-long memberships for veterans in the program in the surrounding Chicago communities.
  • THRUSTER TIP — Yeah we know, this could have been way more helpful on Friday but just think of all the thrusters you’ll do the next 51 weeks and now you’ll have this tip from CrossFit Invictus handy.
  • TORNADO — Last Monday, a tornado ripped through the Georgia-Alabama border, significantly damaging CrossFit Thelo. Members are already planning a community fundraiser WOD, but they set up a GoFundMe page to so anyone can help.

CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)

Mizzen + Main is now hiring for a full time web developerBrent Fikowski put on a speedo and did a belly flop in a cold Canadian lake because he’s not as fit as his friends • Alexis Johnson will be speaking and leading a workout at an upcoming Athlete Training and Health seminary just for women.

The CrossFit Regionals Waiting Games — For the next few weeks, athletes who didn’t qualify for Regionals will be bitting their nails to see if they get a spot. As athletes decline individual invitations to compete on a team, new spots will open up for bubble athletes. Here are a few notable names who still have a shot to punch their tickets. All positions are labeled by the number of spots away from qualification in their region, and some of these numbers may shift overnight.

— Dudes: Nearly certain…Dre Strohm (+1), Chandler Smith (+1), Kyle Kasperbauer (+1), Elijah Muhammad (+2), Cody Mooney (+1), Zak Anderson (+2) Not looking good…Will Moorad (+9), Dakota Rager (+10). Not Happening…Tyson Takasaki (+5).

— Ladies: Nearly certain…Haley Adams (+1), Lacy Baumgart. Too close to call…Teresa Trojanowski (+3). Not looking good…Megin Oczkowski (+8), Alexis Raptis (+5). Not happening…Michele Kinney (+10), Tori Dyson (+14), Melissa Doss (+12), Taylor Babb (+19).

…one notable name we noticed still waiting validation on 18.5 is Sol Sigurdardottir, who went to the 2016 and 2017 CrossFit Games with CrossFit Reykjavik.

Whoops — Stacie Tovar accidentally qualified for Regionals after retiring from competitive CrossFit last year. By the way, this isn’t the first time that’s happened. Most notably in 2016, Julie Foucher placed 10th the year after retiring. Chris Spealler placed 22 two years after retiring, then almost qualified again last year.

P.S. It looks like Mathew Fraser and Cassidy Lance-McWherter are going to be your overall winners of the 2018 CrossFit Open, but we’ll have more on that tomorrow.

“Are You Building Clients Upside Down?” by Nicole Aucoin, CrossFit Journal

When someone first steps foot into a facility, the automatic response is usually to sell him or her on CrossFit so the person can improve fitness.

You earn the person’s trust, and he or she decides to buy in. Great! The new client commits and jumps head first into the CrossFit lifestyle by attending four classes a week. Guess what? Results come. They always do.

Then, about six months in, it happens: The plateau. The member sits down and has a conversation with you about a sticking point often related to weight. You realize eating habits have not changed at all, the body has adjusted to the workouts and the athlete is no longer losing weight at the same rate or at all.

You have to backtrack because you didn’t lay the foundation. You pull out CrossFit’s Theoretical Hierarchy of the Development of an Athlete—the “pyramid,” as it’s often called, shown at right—and explain that nutrition is actually the foundation. You tell the athlete he or she must address nutrition, and this can be a tough conversation once you’ve sold a member on fitness alone. Some people might even feel deceived.
