QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness before seeing what manner of man you may become by developing your bodily strength and beauty to their highest limit.” — Socrates

When you’re missing nine reps, don’t just blame your judge.

The story.

During Event 3 at the South Regionals, Sean Sweeney got a little ahead of himself and ran to the finish line. The only problem is he hadn’t actually finished the workout yet.

Wait what?

Sweeney ran across the finish line at 9:29 but he still had nine pistols left to complete. The head judge came over about 30 seconds later and pulled him back on the floor for the final nine reps.

This error brought his final time up to 10:19 for a 5th place finish. In all likelihood, he would have ended either 2nd or 3rd.

Dang, that stinks.

Yes it sure does, but here’s why we’re writing about it: Sean Sweeney didn’t blame someone else, which is so often what we see happen.

In an interview later on, he took responsibility, saying: “This was a learning experience for me. I got real excited and I saw that I was closing in [on Brandon Luckett]. With all the moving of nine, I forgot to just keep count and I was just counting to nine instead of counting to 54 and I ran a little bit early.

It’s on me to count and I miscounted…It’s obviously frustrating but that’s on me.”

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL.

Regionals Reflections.

Sheila Barden — “I had all intentions of working out today, easing my way back into training before I ramp up for the CrossFit Games next week. But then life happened. I allowed myself to sleep in after a full day of travel yesterday. I woke up tired, sore and overwhelmed with a to-do list that I let slide for the past two weeks….I didn’t train today, I didn’t even put clothes on until after 3pm. This is your friendly reminder that it’s ok to step away from the gym, and in my case, work, for a few days after a competition or a big project or a presentation. Both my mind and my body need an extra day to heal and reset after a fun, but exhausting few weeks of training and competing.”

Tommy Vinas — “Self reflection is a part of self growth. Regionals 2018 started off great then the tidal wave hit. Day 2, I got caught with a hand full of no reps and instead of being composed and focused I let them get to me. Such a rookie mistake but it’s one I’ll learn from and never let happen again. Learning to control what I can control will only make me become a more confident athlete. It hurts like hell watching my Buddy’s take the podium and move on to the next level. It hurts even worse having to walk home empty handed knowing I had more but just under performed. Time to get back to the drawing board and prepared my self better than ever for next years tryouts!”

CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)

Woot, woot. We just hired a new Managing Editor, and you should drop her a note and tell her how we can improve • Hayden Bowe hit a 618 pound squat double • Molly
Vollmer
is 32 weeks pregnant and somehow we totally missed that • Larabar is getting a new flavor: cinnamon roll • Pure Spectrum, makers of CBD oil, are now sponsors of the 2018 CrossFit Games.

…and Stefi Cohen’s transformation photo is pretty much unreal

Deep Dive: The story of the unlikely pairing of Patrick Vellner and his coach, Michele Letendre — “That sea of men in the warm-up area remained intact even as the competitors exited the warmup area to take their places on the competition floor. You see, coaches too are allowed in this section, and from the looks of it, the majority of these male athletes brought along a male coach. Except Vellner.

…Even at 5’1”, Letendre had no problem standing out among the other coaches. She watched her athlete surpass theirs.

…“I’m not gonna sit here and say that I never actually was self-conscious about the fact that I’m a female trying to coach elite male athletes,” Letendre continues. “It is intimidating. But then again, nothing that is worth doing doesn’t have a little bit of intimidation.”

“Letter to My Younger Self” by James Townsend

Dear 17-Year-Old James,

You’ve ruined your life.

So many people poured themselves into you and football. They were counting on you to take care of them; they need you, and you’ve ruined all of it.

Your brothers and sisters worked hard to convince Mom to send you to Holy Cross, across Mill Creek and down route 130 in Delran. You were the only one that went to private school out of your hood. But you got that football scholarship, and you did it, every day. You walked past all those men outside the bodega on 42nd street every morning to catch the bus to Holy Cross. Your friends didn’t have to leave so early for school, so they got to crawl through the hole in the fence to play basketball with milk crates in the abandoned building on your block.

But not you, you went to private school and played football.

And it pays off. It’s Winter, 2002. You just became a Junior All American Football and Track athlete.
