Who’s heading to the Games from the Pacific?

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition is powered by Brute Strength, the Official Online Training Sponsor of the Morning Chalk Up.

Looking to improve your gymnastic skills? Brute Strength’s free three-part gymnastics video series breaks down their formula for increasing your gymnastics capacity. These foundations are for any athlete from getting your first pull-ups to stringing together muscle-ups.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an

indomitable will.” — Mahatma Ghandi.

QUICK BRIEF.

Things to know.

It’s the final day of competition in the Meridian and Atlantic Regionals. The Pacific crowned their kings and queens just a couple of hours ago (more on that below). It’s Sunday and we all deserve to be by the pool, so here are all the CrossFit goodies from Saturday you want to read with your cup of joe.

  1. Hi, I’m Emily Bridgers and I like to smash things. Isn’t it common courtesy that you don’t beat the hell out of everyone else at your retirement party? Emily obviously doesn’t agree. Not only did she win Events 3 and 4, but she broke both worldwide event records demonstrating exactly why she’s won her region three times. With two more events left, she’s only 14 points out of first place and if you want to see the full record board we’ve got you covered.
  2. “That one was for you, Nick.” That’s what Noah Ohlsen said after winning Event 3. Nick is a friend of Noah. Nick’s father passed away suddenly and he took to Reddit to make sure everyone knows what a genuinly awesome guy Noah is. “Noah is genuinely the sweetest, nicest, most genuine dude I think I’ve ever known, and it absolutely kills me when people rip on him as being ‘cocky.'”
  3. The Event 2 and 5 Litmus Test. Every year, Dave programs at least one event that is meant truly distinguish the elite athletes and teams. For the teams, these are Events 2 and 5. Every single team who finished Event 2 or Event 5 under the time cap has qualified for the CrossFit Games. And only four teams have finished both.
  4. The Pacific queen dethroned. After winning her Region five times, Kara Saunders passed the crown to Tia-Clair Toomey. But both athletes put on an amazing show on the final day of competition, trading event records in both Events 5 and 6.
  5. Zeke Grove pulls a Becca Voigt. He was 50 points out of 5th place going into Event 5 and he needed to absolutely haul to crawl back into qualification. His 7th place Event 5 finish followed by a 2nd place Event 6 finish was four points more than he needed to punch his ticket back to Madison, WI.

SURPRISE. SURPRISE.

Who’s up, who’s down.

Who’s up.

Haley Adams, 9th overall, Atlantic: Even at 17-years-old, this isn’t Haley’s first rodeo. She competed at the Atlantic Regionals last year and took 14th — not bad for someone who just got her driver’s license. What impressed us most was she was sitting in 5th place going into Event 4. She’s only 40 points outside of a qualifying spot with two events remaining.

Stephanie Chung, 8th overall, Meridian: The three-time Meridian Regional athlete has never finished under 20th overall. She started Day 2 sitting in 27th place then took back-to-back 4th place finishes. Now she finds herself 30 points outside of a qualifying spot.

Dane Smith, 10th overall, Atlantic: It’s probably not going to happen, but the youngest Smith brother had a 4th place finish in Event 3 then first in Event 4, which launched him way up the leaderboard. He finished 2017 in 24th, so this is already a marked improvement for the 21-year-old.

Who’s down.

Raymond Romanick, 18th overall, Atlantic: This is the guy the entire Internet is rooting for after he wore a t-shirt with his phone number on it asking Sara Sigmundsdottir to call him. She responded and said “Only if you win Regionals.” Sadly, 15th and 36th place finishes have sent that dream completely out of reach. There’s always next year Ray.

Alison Scudds, 27th overall, Atlantic: In 2017, Alison took 7th and came back more determined than ever to qualify for her first Games. Unfortunately, she hasn’t been able to break through.

Jason Smith, 13th overall, Meridian: The Games veteran finds himself way back after two days. With only two events left, the gap looks to be too wide to make up. Last year, he took 3rd in an arguably more competitive combined Europe region.

FLIGHT BOOKED.

Next stop Madison, WI.
