QUOTE OF THE DAY

San Diego CrossFit Affiliate Helps Vets Recover

The story.

A program offered through the Veterans Village of San Diego in CA is letting veterans work out at a local Crossfit gym to help re-adjust to civilian life.

After CrossFit helped him with his own battle with alcoholism, Matt Coder, owner of CrossFit Humanity, believes that veterans who go through the program will do a better job at staying connected with the community and deal with struggles like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and addiction.

That’s cool.

Totally! The vets show up three days a week to WOD.

“The first workout really checked my ego,” says Noel Williamson, a Navy Veteran who completed the program in May. “It taught me that as long as I stay in the moment and continue to breathe, I can push through it…and use those emotions in a workout, and I can get the same payoff at the end.”

The weekly workouts have helped him find a better way to channel his emotions and find purpose again.

So it’s working.

That’s what the gym’s owners had in mind when they started the program.

“The way they carry themselves, the confidence they gain from coming here, it’s amazing,” says owner Matt Coder. Veterans Village officials say they’ve seen a change. Claudia Castro, the coordinator of the Veterans Village Physical Fitness program, thinks so too. “I’m so happy and proud of all of them for committing themselves to this and getting their lives back in order.”

Coffee Break Conversations

What to tell your friend who partied hard all weekend…

That’s gonna hurt in the morning. Get re-hydrated and caffeinated at the same time by mixing your coffee, or a few shots of espresso, with some sparkling mineral water. You’ll get yourself moving again, and you’ll also up your water intake. Grab some bubbly (water, not champagne) and mix it with one of our favorites like Caveman Coffee or Bulletproof Coffee.

What to tell your friend who thinks they want to try intermittent fasting…

Well, it gives you one less thing to do in the morning so that’s cool. It’s not for everyone, and it’s not always fun, but if you can muster the willpower and hold fast, you might see some great results. Believers swear that fasting can boost metabolism, give the digestive system time to rest and promote lean muscle growth. Maybe sleep on it?

Editor’s Note: In Friday’s edition, we mistakingly wrote that Greg Glassman had “made it his mission to take down the soda industry.” We should have written “take on the soda industry.”

CHALK UP READS

“CrossFit is the new contender for gayest sport on the planet” by Les Fabian Brathwaite, Quartz

“It’s totally a cult. Full stop…But it is so much more than just working out, which is where some of the cult vibes come in. When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, my CrossFit family showed up in such a big way. I felt so supported and loved through the entire journey.”

The CrossFit ethos, one predicated on inclusivity, may have something to do with it. Not only does CrossFit welcome LGBT-focused work-out groups, the company severed ties with a gym this week that refused to host a Pride event—and fired its Chief Knowledge Officer for supporting the homophobic move.

Yet unlike other exercise trends, CrossFit exists as an entity unto itself. CrossFit is a lifestyle, a state of mind, and a reason for being. In an age of soul-sucking hookup apps and the waning popularity of gay bars, CrossFit provides a sense of community and kinship for gay men who feel deprived of it. Whether in small towns, big cities or traveling on the road, CrossFit is almost universally an LGBT “safe space.”

Greg Glassman, founder of CrossFit, agrees: “I don’t have anything but love in my heart for anyone who wants to find health and fitness—we were friendlier than other fitness communities in that regard. I built the gym and the concept that I would participate in. There’s no place for anything but hard work and love. Nothing else really matters.”
