The Christmas challenge was set.

Instead of AMRAPS, perhaps you hit a PR of EAMTAS (Eat As Much Turkey As Possible)

‘Tis the season for athletes to enjoy rest with loved ones and while we’re encouraging a little indulgence, we’ve consulted the experts to devise a fool-proof strategy to enjoy holiday celebrations and also ensure that first workout back at the box isn’t too painful.

Festive fuel: My nutrition coach Amy Locati, at Working Against Gravity, advises taking a break from tracking for at least a day over the holidays, but keeping one or two goals in place so you don’t go overboard.

  • Perhaps keep your breakfast the same – so you don’t go into festive feasts TOO hungry.
  • Take a water bottle with you to flush out some of the extra sodium & stay hydrated between those “other” beverages.
  • Perhaps pick just one dessert – rather than taking a ‘sample’ serving of everything that’s on offer.

Australia comeback queen Kara Saunders shared her festive nutrition strategies here.

Stretching throughout the silly season: If you’re like some of our team, you’ll spend much of the festive season in transit visiting family and friends.

We’re tempted to steal tips from our very own Tommy Marquez who developed his own EHOH (Every hour on the hour) workout on his return flight home from the Dubai CrossFit Championship. Tommy was up out of his seat to do a round of squats on the hour – a fellow passenger even decided to join in after the first few rounds!

Being from the land down under, no flight’s a quick one for me either. I like to ensure I get up every hour, and either do a lap of the plane or lunge down the aisle – 50 steps forward and 50 steps back.

GOWOD suggests giving the gift of mobility to your loved ones this Christmas. That’s the beauty of online apps and mobility programs, the box doesn’t need to be open for you to stretch something other than your stomach this Christmas.

Try ROMWOD, GOWOD or The Ready State for easy to follow, anywhere, anytime programs.

Wanna’ workout: Former Games athlete Brandon Swan who programs for Swanstrong has prescribed a crowd favourite for his online clients on Christmas day.

AMRAP 24 hours:
Eat as much custard as possible.

All jokes aside, Brandon said he’d started his Christmas Day off with a workout: “Get it out of the way early, before the presents and food, and then enjoy the rest of the day.”

“I don’t think anyone should feel guilty about training or not training … You should only do it because you want to.”

Here’s one for your living room or backyard if you’re finding yourself itching for some fitness between Christmas and New Years.

AMRAP 30 minutes:
25 double unders
12 push-ups
19 squats

From everyone here at the Morning Chalk Up, we hope you’re all enjoying the break and are ready to hit your goals with gusto in 2020.
