In 2020, amidst a global pandemic and in the wake of the fallout from Greg Glassman’s comments that caused the disaffiliation of hundreds of CrossFit affiliates, Bern Prince, a coach at Invictus Boston, pulled off the first ever Invictus Boston Invitational. An event that brought awareness to the Black Lives Matter Movement and the racial injustices that people of color face.

Remind me: The event was a major success, bringing in some of the most influential black CrossFitters in the community, including CrossFit Games athlete Tola Morakinyo.

  • “In the summer when Greg Glassman showed his true colors and made insidious comments that almost destroyed our sport, we created the Invictus Boston Invitational where athletes, judges, volunteers, and just cool human beings gathered in unity to not only compete in a competition but show what real CrossFit is when all people are included and welcome,” said Prince.
  • The event worked to raise money and awareness for Campaign Zero, a non-profit organization that works to support the analysis of police practice as well as ending police violence nationwide.
  • The competition featured a roster of only 21 athletes, but drew hundreds of spectators.

One big thing: Last year, Prince made it a point to say that his goal was to make the competition an annual event, as well as to grow the competition.

  • This year, he’ll follow through with that promise to make the event bigger and better.
  • The Invictus Boston Invitational will be held on June 19th, 2021, with a qualifier leading up to the event, which will take place From February 11th, 2021 through February 20th, 2021.

The qualifier: The qualifier is currently open for registration and will feature an Rx and a scaled division.

The qualifier: The qualifier is currently open for registration and will feature an Rx and a scaled division.

  • 10 male and 10 female athletes will qualify for the Invitational through the qualifier. The remaining 10 athletes in each division will receive an invitation to compete.
  • The qualifier workouts will be released throughout the months of January and February and will feature two workouts, both designed by Prince.
  • The qualifier fees are $20 for Rx and $10 for scaled.

Bigger and better: Last year’s invitational featured an impressive roster of sponsors, including NoBull and Rx Smart Gear. This year, organizers hope to make the event even bigger with more sponsors and prizes.

  • They have already raised $3,000 in cash prizes from various sponsors and hope to raise more by the time of the invitational.
  • They also hope to bring in more sponsors and prizes for the online qualifier event.
