Today Was A Good Day

May 11, 2022 by

As Ice Cube once sang, today was a good day.

I have been doing CrossFit since 2013 but moved and changed gyms (for a second time) this past December. Since making the move, which was to not just a new gym but a new state entirely, I have not felt like I have been putting forth my best.

Don't get me wrong - I have been giving my all - but it has seemed that my all was not what it once was.

Today I felt like that changed.

Honestly, I think I first felt it last week when I had to do (gasp) burpees over the bar and was, in my opinion, rather efficient at them (HUGE GASP!!!)

I believe I was in the best shape of my life roughly a year ago. I was coaching almost daily at the box I belonged to In Little Rock; I had signed up for a competition; I was eating (rather) smartly.

When it came time for the competition, The Garage Games Master's Tour, I felt great and I performed as well as I had hoped. I didn't win anything, but I also didn't DFL any event either.

Fast forward to November and I was invited to Texas for the Masters of the Master's Final in January.

Remember I said I moved states in December.

When I got to Kansas I was all out of whack. New gym, new programming, new people.

This is not to say none of those things weren't good, they were just different.

When I got to Texas I can say without a doubt that I was disappointed in my performance. I thought I was better than that.

I just chalked it up to the move and moved on.

Then a week before the Open I felt something off in my left Achilles while doing double-unders. After putting off seeing someone for over a month, I relented and went to the doctor. The diagnosis: a partially torn Achilles and Haglund's Deformity.

Meeting with the PT, she prescribed some flexibility movements for me. That was after she laughed (along with me) about how inflexible I actually was.

Then last week, I took time off to go on vacation.

No working out. No running. No rowing. No nothing.

Well, except for potentially breaking my big toe (but maybe it's just jammed).

Back at the gym last week I felt sluggish from my vacation diet but fresh in the muscles.

Yesterday (Tuesday) I felt like I was moving quickly through the metcon.

Then today came. Squat cleans (I have terrible depth overall) for percentage loads and then a metcon with (for me) chest to bar pullups, air squats and running. And I felt great. The lifts felt light. The pullups felt right. I felt good.

So maybe, just maybe, I'm back.
