Grateful Crossfit doesn’t impose Weight Limits

May 21, 2022 by

Weight has been a hot topic in our household this week. My husband and son are going on a high adventure trip in a few weeks and my husband was stressed the day of his physical that he might be over the weight limit. Both of my guys are in the clear for the trip.

While I was at the gym this morning doing conditioning work to prep for Murph, it occurred to me how grateful I am that Crossfit, at least in my experience, does not impose weight limits. I can't imagine being told that in order to do Murph I have lose 30 pounds to get my BMI into the "normal" rather than the "overweight" category. My response might have been one that would make a sailor blush and have the coach calling my priest suggesting that I need to schedule confession.

With high adventure trips, scouts and leaders go into remote areas where it is difficult for emergency services access so wanting scouts and leaders to meet certain criteria makes some sense although weight doesn't tell the whole story of a person's physical fitness.

My coach did suggest improving my nutrition as losing weight helps relieve pressure my body's joints after I began experiencing hip pain after running. Weight loss isn't the only solution; I am working on strengthening my hips and my core and I plan to get a gait analysis with possible custom orthotic inserts. There is no guarantee that I will be a runner even after all these steps.

Many folks like myself go to Crossfit to improve themselves by increasing strength, flexibility, mobility, and overall well being. If a weight limit were imposed, many of us wouldn't have had the opportunity to walk through the door.
