How to Watch 20.2 and Expert Predictions

If 20.1 is any indication of the remaining four weeks, well then we’re in for a doozy this year in the Open. A simple couplet of ground-to-overhead and bar-facing burpees left the CrossFit masses in a crumpled heap after week 1. The sting we’re used to feeling in week 5 of the Open, showed up right away, and now all eyes turn to 20.2.

This week we’ve got a pair of announcements and matchups on opposite sides of the globe, with two Sanctionals playing host to announcements in the great white north of Canada, and the sunny shores of Australia. In week one, our match-up predictions didn’t fare so well, as the burpee-heavy workout set the stage for some upsets, as well a golden sombrero for editor-in-chief Justin LoFranco. Below is how to watch as well as our expert picks, and results from week 1.

Brandon Domingue: 2-2
Tommy Marquez: 1-3
Justin LoFranco: 0-4

239,106 Athletes Register for 10th CrossFit Open

At the close of 20.1, 239,106 athletes registered for the 10th CrossFit Open according to numbers provided by CrossFit, Inc. CrossFit also said that between the two Opens this year a combined 450,386 individual athletes signed up to participate.

One big thing: This is actually a net financial win for CrossFit. With two Opens in a single year, there were a combined 597,752 total signups, which is about 181,000 more signups than the 2018 Open. That’s $3,635,040 more in revenue.

The big picture: The reduced number of sign-ups isn’t too surprising given the move from late February to October. It is also the second Open of the year, which is also a lot to ask of affiliates. The important thing to note is where the numbers are next year.

By the numbers:

  • 2019/2020 – 239,106
  • 2019 – 358,646
  • 2018 – 416,000
  • 2017 – 380,000
  • 2016 – 324,307
  • 2015 – 273,257
  • 2014 – 209,948
  • 2013 – 140,000
  • 2012 – 70,000
  • 2011 – 26,000

“CrossFit During Chemo: Why We All Need To Be #Stronglikelisa,” by Brittney Kleyn, Morning Chalk Up

Ask any CrossFitter, suffering is part and parcel with the Sport of Fitness.

But there are very few who will experience pain like Lisa Fosnough, who’s powering through workouts whilst undergoing chemotherapy.

“I can still do pull-ups, just not as many. I can still clean and snatch, just not as heavy. I can still row, just not as fast,” Lisa said.

“My doctors have already told me that they have never seen anyone in such good condition given the high doses of chemo they are giving me, I think this is because of my attitude and my want (or need!) to continue working out,” she added.

Lisa has always been a fighter.

The mother of three found CrossFit in 2013, whilst training for her sixth marathon. The 43 year old from Parkville, Missouri joined her local affiliate and was immediately hooked: “It was hard for me to “ease” into it because it felt like the type of workouts I had been looking for all my life,” she told the Morning Chalk Up.

Lisa described how the community at KCI CrossFit in Kansas City immediately became like family. They also provided her a refugee and “safe place” when she was diagnosed with a rare form of osteosarcoma – a type of bone cancer – in her right thigh earlier this year.

“I love when I walk into KCI, I don’t have to worry about people giving me the ‘Aww, are you ok? … All the members just treat me like me,” Lisa said.
