CrossFit Open Announcement 25.2: First Look and Predictions

February 15, 2025 by

Week two of the CrossFit Open will kick off with the 25.2 announcement in Arizona with two notable elite women athletes going head-to-head:

  • Emily Rolfe — Third Fittest Woman in 2024
  • Sydney Wells — 28th at the CrossFit Games in 2023

This is Wells’s second live Open announcement; her first was 24.3 last season. For Rolfe, this will be her first.

  • The announcement plans were shared with the public in an Instagram post on February 13.

  • Get caught up on the new format for the 2025 CrossFit season, along with both major and minor rulebook changes.

The details: In the post, CrossFit shared that the 25.2 live announcement, presented by the U.S. Border Patrol, is going to be hosted by CrossFit Incendia in Peoria, AZ, on March 6 at noon PT.

  • The announcement will be streamed live on the CrossFit Games website and YouTube channel.

The workout is still unknown, but we do know that there will be a repeat Open workout this year at some point.

The CrossFit Open 25.2 Matchup

This head-to-head matchup is the iconic setup for the Open announcement, where two athletes take on the workout right next to each other. Here’s how we think it’ll break down:

Emily Rolfe vs. Sydney Wells

Rolfe is a five-time individual Games athlete with four event wins under her belt. She is a veteran of the sport and is most known for her incredible engine.

Meanwhile, Wells, twin sister to fellow Games veteran Brooke Wells, is looking to make a comeback after a score penalty in the 2024 season kept her from continuing onto Semifinals.

  • Rolfe finished on the podium in third at the Games in 2024, with her most impressive finish being the “Chad1000X” event. She finished just 14 seconds ahead of Gabi Migala to clinch the first-place event win.

Wells, known to be good at gymnastics, also has a strong endurance background as a collegiate track athlete at the University of Missouri.

  • When Wells competed at the 2023 Games, she took 10th place in the cross-country 5k event with a time of 18:37. She finished 28th at the Games overall that year.

For a point of comparison, we looked at the 2023 Games performance for both athletes. Rolfe took 12th place overall that year.

  • The events with the biggest discrepancies in placement between the two were “Ride” and “Intervals.” Both were endurance-heavy events, which favored Rolfe’s skill set.
  • Events where the two were a bit closer in overall placement were the “Alpaca Redux” and “Ski Bag.” Both events had some heavy movements, such as the double 50-pound kettlebell clean and jerks and the sandbag cleans at 125 pounds.

2024 Open

  • Emily Rolfe: 99th place overall
  • Sydney Wells: 146th place overall

2023 Open

  • Emily Rolfe: 72nd place overall
  • Sydney Wells: 138th place overall
