QUOTE OF THE DAY
“Easy doesn’t change you.” — Unknown
HOW ONE ADAPTIVE ATHLETE IS PROVING ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
MEET MISTY.
“Use your challenges to inspire others”— That’s one of Misty Diaz’s life mottos.
Misty, aka Lil Misty or Biggie Smalls, was born with Myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida.
REMIND ME.
Spina bifida is a birth defect where there is incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord. Some symptoms can include difficulty walking, nerve injury, or even paralysis of the lower body.
CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP.
After a series of 28 surgeries, Misty was battling an addiction to painkillers, but she was determined to get her life back. What started as a daily walk to the end of the street eventually lead her to her first 5k race. Now she’s done more than 190, including Spartan races.
Misty is now literally a badass competitive athlete.
HER GOAL.
To make sure the world and others struggling with things like her understand that even if you do things differently, you can still accomplish your goals.
YES GIRL. That’s the true definition of beauty and strength.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX
ROUNDUP — Not even we can concisely describe this Asian military unit team jump roping in a figure eight…well we kinda did. Ken Battiston hits a 315 pound thruster for three reps. At 93-years-old, this grandma does her very first deadlift.
Tweets that could be about any one of us…
“I need to know why everyone said I could save money bringin lunch to work. It’s 9:43 I ate the lunch, now I have to buy another lunch for lunch.” — @imteddybless
Sigmundsdottir on living and training in the U.S…“I LOVED IT!! The community in Mayhem was unreal, I am so lucky that I met Yvette (manager of CrossFit Mayhem) and she completely took me in as her own daughter…The team is just so helpful and supportive. And not only the team, everybody in Cookeville were so welcoming and willing to do everything to help me feel like I was at home.”
— But will she be back in Cookeville for 2018?
Save this for later…One Los Angeles reporter hits LA’s boutique fitness scene in search of the toughest fitness class out there. “I really didn’t want the answer to be CrossFit, though. I mean, how cliché can you get?”
FROM THE RUSSELLS — “Last week, three U.S. Army generals called attention to the ‘next existential threat’…the inability to recruit enough able-bodied volunteers to fight a war…’the majority of it is [due to] physical conditioning’…It’s not all bad news. CrossFit has expanded from 1 to 14,000 gyms since 2002, put thousands of military personnel through its Level 1 Certificate Course, and the U.S. government is currently funding a $2.4-million-dollar study on employing CrossFit in the Army.”
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE NO WEIGHT FOR WEIGHTED PULL-UPS…
You grab your dog and a gym bag. And now you’ve got 53 pounds of doggy weight for strict pull-ups. This isn’t the first time Danielle Resha has used odd (and living) objects for fitness. For her birthday, she squatted her grandmother. Not kidding.
THINGS TO…
HEAR: Why Everyone Should Squat
Squatting is down right great for you. But don’t take our word for it. Dr. Aaron Horschig of Squat University joins the Nasty Girls Podcast for an episode dedicated to squats, some tests you can perform at home and exercises to fix common faults.
SQUAT BETTER.
EAT: Creamy Peanut Carrot Soup
Soup season is upon us. If you regularly cook paleo, you’ll have most of these items at home already, and just add some shredded chicken for more protein.
SOUP PLEASE.
BUY: Lift Up Love, Not Hate
CrossFit Terminus just dropped a new t-shirt, tank and crop top for a limited time. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

More on CrossFit New England’s 24 Hours of WODs…“24 Hero workouts in 24 hours is no joke. 18 workouts in, things are getting real. Two of the athletes completing all 24, among the fittest at @cfne, are taking on fluid intravenously. Many here have done upwards of 8, and are scattered throughout the gym in various states of recovery. As they wrap up one of the toughest workouts on the docket (“Spehar”), the mood is quiet.”
What happens to the families on the front line?
When one of our first responders looses their lives on duty, their families suffer an impossible hardship. The BackStoppers exists to provide financial assistance and help support these families when they need it the most.
UnChartered CrossFit in St. Charles, MO believes in this mission and is donating all the money from their second annual Battle for the Badges to support this organization.
