QUOTE OF THE DAY

We do not rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.” — Archilochus

A brief history of National Doughnut Day.

Way way back in 1938…

The Salvation Army in Chicago created this event to honor the “Donut Lassies” who served doughnuts to WWI soldiers. The event was used as a fundraiser to help those in need during the Great Depression.

Ever since, its been celebrated on the first Friday in June and it remains a fundraiser today. The Salvation Army is hosting a series of “Do Good Donut Parties” to serve more than 10,000 doughnuts to Veterans across America.

Who were these “Donut Lassies”?

In 1917, about 250 “Donut Lassies” went to France and handmade doughnuts and served coffee to soldiers coming off the front lines. Their mission was actually much larger than just handing over freshly baked, doughy goodness — but to give spiritual aid and comfort to soldiers. Or as the Salvation Army puts it, “to be a link with home and family.”

The whole idea was obviously an instant hit — shocker — and one volunteer, Ensign Margaret Sheldon, even came up an ingenious idea to fry the doughnuts in soldiers’ helmets.

Doughnut or Donut?

It doughnut matter. But if you’ve got a hankering for the best thing ever created head over to Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme, or Walmart we’re they’re serving them out free today.

If you can’t celebrate today, then mark your calendar for International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day on June 9 and National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day on September 14. Or you can just pick-up a box of protein doughnuts from Dough Bar.

QUICK. QUICK.

Regionals: Catch me up.

Good morning. Today’s edition is coming from Justin who drew the short straw and pulled midnight duty. Day 1 at the Pacific Regionals wrapped up about a forty-five minutes ago around 1:15 AM Pacific time. Things are currently underway in the Meridian Regional as Team Event 2 just kicked off.

The Fittest and the Second Fittest spent Day 1 battling back and forth, especially in Linda, where Kara held a lead for the majority of the event. If you have time to go back and watch later today, take note of Tia’s finish. She remains on her feet the entire time and looks completely unfazed by Linda.

Here are a few other things we noticed:

  1. So where’s Rob Forte? If you’re looking for the seven-time CrossFit Games athlete who finished 13th in the Australasia Region in the Open, he’s competing on a team with Reebok CrossFit Frankston and they’re currently in first place.
  2. James Newbury became the first male athlete to start Day 1 with two first place finishes. Katrin Davidsdottir was the first female athlete, and was joined by Tia-Clair Toomey yesteday.
  3. That’s a lot of new faces. On the men’s side, there are only five CrossFit Games veterans competing: James Newbury, Mitchell Sinnamon, Zeke Grove, Brandon Swan and Khan Porter
  4. Katelin Marks gave birth to a baby boy just eight months ago and she’s currently sitting in 15th place after a 4th and 34th place finishes.

Flashback to 11 Months Ago…’A Plus-Size Girl Fitting in a CrossFit World’ by Jessica Solomon — “My name is Jessica Solomon, and I’m a plus-size CrossFit athlete. Even at my fittest in high school — while I was involved in basketball, softball, track, the dance team, swimming, rock climbing, hiking, and whatever else I could do to be active — I was still considered ‘plus-size.'”

“I would see pictures from other CrossFit boxes, and their members all looked pretty fit. I began to feel like I may be doing nothing but embarrassing my coach and the owners of my box by being there. I didn’t want them to feel ashamed of the fact that I was wearing the gym t-shirts and promoting our box, while being plus-size. Over time I’ve gained confidence in myself and my body, and I am learning that these thoughts are a lie.” …continue reading.

“Building Community Behind Bars” by Andréa Maria Cecil, CrossFit Journal

The pause was almost indiscernible.

“Murder,” he said, all but whispering.

On the night of Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, then-27-year-old Damian Arguello was high on crack cocaine when he fatally stabbed his wife and 1-year-old son. His other two children—5 and 6 at the time—ran to a neighbor’s house when Arguello and his wife started arguing.

The neighbor later found Crystal and Rayven Arguello’s bodies in a bedroom inside the Arguello home and called 911, according to published reports. Roughly two hours later, police arrested Arguello during a traffic stop.

Prosecutors sought the death penalty. Arguello didn’t argue.

“That’s what I get. That’s what I deserve,” he thought at the time.

His family talked him out of it.
