QUOTE OF THE DAY

Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games.” — Babe Ruth

CATCH ME UP.

Day two recap

Today was a rest day for the Individuals, Teams, 16-17teens and  35-49 masters. And for the individuals, this was great news after yesterday’s marathon row. Ever wonder what the first thing that comes to mind the morning after you row a marathon?

  • “Um…babe…I am jacked up.” — Tennill Beuerlein
  • “I could probably sleep all day, but I should go eat and drink some.” Noah Ohlsen (who lost eight pounds Wednesday alone, BTW)
  • “Slowly, slowly. Okay. Okay, we’re actually okay.” Meredith Root
  • “So glad for a rest day.” Sean Sweeney
  • “Hey! It’s not as bad as it was last night!” — Mekenzie Riley
  • “Literally the only thing I want to do right now is get in the hot tub. But first, coffee.” — Cole Sager
  • “I feel better than I expected I would. Back and hamstrings are sore but not completely wrecked. Maybe the 2 day soreness will kick in Friday morning but right now I feel pretty decent.” — Jared Enderton

Here’s to hoping it’s not as bad today for Alessandra Pichelli, too. She told us she’s feeling much better today. But last night, the former collegiate rower struggled through more than an hour of muscle cramps which reduced her row down to a crawl. We’ve got the story of what went down and how she fought through, but we’re hoping she’s not too affected to make a strong showing today.

Yesterday, CrossFit posted the breakdown of the weights lifted during the CrossFit Total. There is a 345 pound difference between Tia-Clair Toomey and the 2007 winner Nichole Dehart. And the only athlete not to post a successful lift was James Newbury who failed all his strict press attempts.

From the looks of it, there will be three events today: battleground, an event TBA and Fibionacci.

Fibonacci is back from 2017 but with a slight variation. Both men and women will be performing the same rep scheme. Last year, the women performed 3-5-8 for the paralette decifict handstand push-ups. This year they’ll be 5-8-13 like the men. Here’s a brief look back at how 2018 athletes returning from 2017 performed on this event.

So far the only two individual athletes out are Michele Fumagalli and Alexandre Caron, who fell and injured his knee while during his last back squat during the CrossFit total.

…and Dave Castro announced three individual and two events for Saturday.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE.

Who’s up, who’s down.

Who’s Up.

Laura Horvath, 1st, 338 points — The rookie from Hungary had about as good a Day 1 as any athlete could hope for. She never placed outside of the top 10 on a single event and took 2nd in the Crit and 3rd in 30 Muscle-Ups for time. Just as impressive, the 21-year-old tied for 3rd with a 405 pound deadlift and 8th with a 315 pound back squat.

Lukas Hogberg, 2nd, 296 points — Sitting just two points behind Mathew Fraser, Lukas Hogberg isn’t about to let the 2x champ run away with it. Last year, Hogberg failed to qualify for the CrossFit Games.

Patrick Vellner, 6th, 248 points — For the second year in a row, Patrick Vellner faced bike malfunctions in Event 1 which sent him to the bike of the line. Vellner returned with 1 top 10 finish and 2 top 5 finishes to climb back up the leaderboard and into the top day.

Who’s down.

Sara Sigmundsdottir, 10th, 210 points — A mid-race push for the lead on Event 1 sent Sara Sigmundsdottir back down the pack to 21st place. That followed by three ok performances has Sara barely holding onto a top 10 position.
