QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Winning is fun, sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you’ve done is the point.” — Pat Summitt

The Top 10 Moments from the 2018 CrossFit Games

Five days, 560 competitors and nearly 500 individual events later, the 2018 CrossFit Games has come to a close and crowned the fittest athletes on Earth.

Here are a few fun facts you should know:

  • 5: Mathew Fraser now has now tied Rich Froning for the most male podium finishes. Froning still has one more win than Fraser.
  • 3 x 3: There are now three women who’ve been crowned Fittest on Earth back-to-back: Annie Thorisdottir, Katrin Davidsdottir, and now Tia-Clair Toomey.
  • 3,249,015: The number of meters 77 athletes collectively rowed during the row marathon.
  • 800: Volunteers showed up to help make the 2018 CrossFit Games a success.

Now that all the dust has settled, here are ten of our favorite moments from 2018.

10. Jared Enderton being cheered on to finish the Bicouplet. In CrossFit, the last one working gets the loudest cheers and that proved true for Games rookie Jared Enderton as he worked to complete Individual Event 11, Bicouplet 1. The crowd rose to their feet to help him get through those last few lifts.

9. Alessandra Pichelli suffers through 90 agonizing minutes of rowing. Alessandra Pichelli, a former division 1 rower, endured more than an hour and 20,000 meters in terrible pain due to cramping during the row marathon. Refusing to give up, she rowed for portions with only one hand but still managed to finish in 14th.

8. Vellner and Fraser stumbling on the cargo net. During the obstacle portion of The Battleground, Patrick Vellner fell from the cargo net, landing hard on his shoulder. He went on to finish fourth in the event. Mat Fraser fell from the cargo net, his weight vest getting caught up several times on his way down. Fraser finished second.

7. Margaux Alvarez Rowing Really, Really Fast. Margaux Alvarez rowed a marathon in 3 hours, 42 seconds, which would have placed her 9th in the world in her weight class…among men. Among women? She would have placed first.

6. Patrick Vellner deadlifting 595 pounds to take second in the CrossFit Total. That’s more than three times his body weight. He got second place in the event, only five pounds behind Royce Dunne.

5. Fourteen-year-old Maddy Espinoza jerking 200 pounds. Yep, that’s right. She’s only fourteen and she got a 220 pound split jerk PR on the competition floor at the CrossFit Games. The smile on her face at the end says it all.

4. Emily Bridgers saying goodbye to CrossFit. After five trips to the CrossFit Games, Emily Bridgers says goodbye, and thank you, to CrossFit. “Remember me for making a positive impact on CrossFit in the early years. I was there. I saw it. I did it. And I want you to remember, the number one thing, that I smiled every time I crossed the finish line. Every time.”

3. Laura Horvath Wins Aeneas. Rookie Laura Horvath and reigning Fittest Woman Tia-Clair Toomey raced to the finish of Aeneas in the final event of the CrossFit Games. Laura had no plans on giving the champion an easy win and took the event by just 6 seconds.

2. Sara Sigmundsdottir completing six workouts over three days with a fractured rib. In those six events, she averaged a 12th place finish including 10th on the marathon row, 6th on the clean and jerk speed ladder and 6th on Fibionacci.

1. Tia-Clair Toomey and Mathew Fraser winning the 2018 CrossFit Games. Mathew Fraser won the CrossFit Games for the third straight year. And Tia-Clair Toomey, in the most dominant female performance in years, won her second straight. In their careers, neither athlete has ever placed lower than second place at the Games.

CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)

Christmas Abbott taped up her baby belly and enjoyed the CrossFit Games like a champ • CrossFit Kilter was so inspired by the Row Marathon they put their own on • Hayden Bowe got a 520 pound PR deadlift for ten • Corey Clay proposed to girlfriend Nicole Doming at the CrossFit Games.

…James Foster autographed the back of Mat Fraser’s shirt at the CrossFit Games.

Brent Fikowski on Finishing Fourth…“Finished fourth place this weekend at the CrossFit Games, missed out on a podium spot on a tiebreak to the fit and handsome Lukas Hogberg. I went as hard as I could on the finale to close the gap and it wasn’t quite enough. In situations like these you can choose to be bitter by looking at what could have been, or you can be grateful for everything you have. Happiness is a choice, so I will
choose to be thankful for this amazing weekend!”

Jared Enderton Gave it all he had…”I gave the CrossFit Games everything I had. I kept smiling and enjoying it throughout the week because I knew as long as I went as hard as I could there’s nothing I can change. I’m not satisfied with the placement or result, but, I am 100% satisfied with my effort and performance throughout the week. I did my best. Thank you to everyone for all of the support. I’m sorry I can’t get to all your messages but I promise they’re appreciated! Thank you.”

Sean Sweeney Says Thanks — “Thank you! This weekend was surreal. My hope is that someone new to CrossFit watched the CrossFit Games, saw how much fun I was having and that motivates them to take their first steps in their fitness journey. This sport has truly changed my life for the better, and I’m honored to share this lifestyle with the world.”

Jamie Hagiya Wants All the Food Now, Please — “Four days, 11 events, and an 11th place team finish with my amazing teammates at our first CrossFit Games together. So much to reflect on, but for now, we’ll enjoy this moment and eat alllllll the bad foods! Thank you to everyone for all of your love and support! It definitely showed and helped us all weekend!”

Michele Letendre is One Happy Coach — Letendre, coach to Patrick Vellner, Laura Horvath, and Willy Georges is proud of her athletes.

“Thank You, CrossFit” by Emily Bridgers, Morning Chalk Up

I remember at the 2014 Southeast Regionals, I was sitting in second place after Day 1. Dave Castro walked right up to me. “See you in Carson,” he said.

He knew.

He saw it in me.

He was right.

I took first and I’d go on to win that Region for the next three years.

I knew at the end of 2017 Games that this would be my last year. You’re not just quitting a job and walking out of an office. My job as a competitive athlete is also a lifestyle, and that lifestyle provides me with so many relationships. Chyna and Freddy. Stacie Tovar. Becca Voigt. All of the trips. The sponsors that have supported me for years. It’s a big change.  I’ve spent this last year mentally preparing.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about stepping away, but I am just as ready to leave as I was to start. And that’s the difference this time. I’m ready to start the next chapter of my life.
