Annie Thorisdottir Has her Eyes on 2019

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition was fueled by FNX, the Official Supplement Sponsor of the Morning Chalk Up.

The marathon row was a game changer at the CrossFit Games this year. Many struggled with cramps, dehydration and overall body fatigue. Check out which new product helped our athletes Margaux Alvarez (1st place in the row) and Cole Sager (3rd place in the row) stay hydrated and perform at such a high level for so long!

Sunday Dinner at Chick-fil-A?

It’s not what you think.

Chick-fil-A restaurant is branching out into the meal kit business. Starting this month, they’ll have Chick-fil-A meal kits for sale inside 150 of their Atlanta restaurants.

Ummm yes, but why?

Trying to keep up with the competition at home meal kits have created, they’re the first fast food restaurant to try this. You don’t even have to get out of your car. You’ll be able to get them in the drive-thru.

Is it the same menu?

No, not really. The meal kits are similar to the type you’d get from Blue Apron or Hello Fresh. Chick-fil-A will start with five different meal kits to choose from: chicken parmesan, chicken enchiladas, crispy Dijon chicken, pan-roasted chicken, and chicken flatbread. Yes, there are photos.

Ohhhh, these are like real meals!

Now you get it. And, they’ll cost $15.89, can be prepared in 30 minutes or less, and are designed to feed two people. And, if you’re a die-hard Chick-fil-A fan, now you can grab a meal kit or two on a Saturday and take ’em home for Sunday dinner when you’re really jonesin’ for your favorite chicken on the go.

Coffee Break Conversations

What to tell your friend who never goes to dinner anymore now that he counts his macros…

You gotta live, bro. Spending too much time dieting and tracking can have negative effects. We all know that constantly restricting certain foods can sometimes backfire. Next thing you know you’re going full send on the buffet. So, every once in a while take a break from tracking your macros. Eat the cupcake. Have the beer. Do the things.

What to tell your sister when says she can’t get to the gym because she has the kids…

False. Katie Miller of Ft. Wright CrossFit didn’t let that stop her. She tossed her kid up on her shoulders and did the workout that way. Sort of like some kind of a weight vest? Like a child-sized weight vest. Either way, Katie got it done.

Things To…

WATCH: From Obese to Beast

John David Glaude, who once weighed 360 pounds, reclaimed his health with nutrition and CrossFit. “I got to a point at my heaviest where I was okay with dying before I was 40,” Glaude says.

  • FUNDRAISER FOR DYLAN — This Saturday CrossFit Greenwood is hosting a fundraiser WOD for six-month-old Dylan Emery, who is fighting Krabbe disease. The event starts at 10 AM and is $20 to participate.
  • CROSSFIT GYM HELPS AFTER HATE CRIME — After Surjit Malhi, a member of CrossFit Parabellum, was attacked for wearing a turban, his CrossFit community came together to care for him, bringing him dinner and doing his yardwork. “That is what it means to be an American,” he said.
  • TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY — Congratulations to CrossFit Cedar City on their ten year anniversary!

Carleen Mathews on Being on the CrossFit Games Demo Team — “What a week, such an epic experience and so beyond honored to have been chosen to be on the Demo Team this year. So much fun with this team, and memories and moments I will never forget. This was 100% the best way to experience the CrossFit Games outside of competing for me! Thank you Dave Castro.

Annie Thorisdottir is On a Mission — “Every year the competition gets harder. Every year the margin for error decreases and small missteps are even more costly. You have to believe that you’ve done everything to prepare yourself for what’s to come and follow through and execute. You have to be fit and smart enough to seek out the luck, to make your move at the right time, and run with any momentum you gain. I’m so proud to be amongst the five fittest girls in the world – even if I would have wanted more, there is no shame in sitting behind those ladies. That being said, this made me want it even
more.”

Jared Enderton Received a Message from an Inspired Fan — “Wanted to tell you that you’re an inspiration for me. I’m an ex D1 athlete that heard about your story of weight loss and making it to the CrossFit Games. I just found out my poor choices have landed me with type 2 Diabetes. My CrossFit journey starts tomorrow. Thanks for your courage. Hopefully I can do what you did.”

“Why Strength Is So Important to a CrossFit Athlete” by Hunter Britt, CrossFit Invictus Blog

The stronger you are, the better. That’s a simple fact in CrossFit.

The stronger you are at whatever you are doing, the easier it will be to perform that task. Whether it is deadlifting 315lbs, performing 10 minutes for max calories on an Assault Bike or performing a muscle-up.

Strength is how much force your muscles can create. Strength shouldn’t be confused with size. Size is definitely associated with strength, but this article is focused on increasing the amount of force your muscles can create and why it’s important.

The obvious example in why strength helps in CrossFit is in weightlifting and powerlifting.

It is easy to see that an athlete has gotten stronger when they used to deadlift 400lbs and now they can lift 500lbs.

Now, when that athlete needs to deadlift 315lbs for a metcon, it feels a whole lot lighter. Where we do not always pay attention to strength helping us is on cardio machines.

There are four things that make someone a good “Rower” – technique, strength, body weight, and conditioning. Training in each is going to be helpful in improving your pace and making your times faster.
