QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” — Calvin Coolidge

“You Are the Leader of Your Story” by Gulf Times

Amna al-Haddad’s story is an inspirational one — it’s an account of how a life can be changed from the ordinary to becoming a ‘game-changer’. Amna is an Olympic weightlifting athlete, the first Arab woman to compete in Crossfit, and a woman of many firsts.

Tell us something about yourself…

It all began when I was a 19-year-old at university, leading an unhealthy lifestyle. I had no motivation, ate loads of junk food and suffered from depression. One day, I just decided things needed to change, I simply said “enough is enough” and from there on, I embarked on a health journey. I decided to make a complete turnaround in my life and there was no turning back. I soon got into Crossfit and weightlifting and went on to make history.”

“Making Weight: I lost 25 percent of my body weight, but my journey continues” by Daniel Finney, Des Moines Register

For the past two years, since that day at Mercy Medical Center when my friend offered me a wheelchair because I was wheezing from walking down the hall, I’ve dedicated myself to losing weight and regaining control over my health. But there have been temptations all along the way.I knew mashed potatoes and gravy at Thanksgiving was a bad idea, and the ice cream and cookies at Christmas gatherings weren’t a terrific choice either. I’ve eaten more carbs in recent months: fries, sandwiches with bread (rather than in a wrap) and so on.

Still, I told myself, perhaps there was some hope.
