How Becoming a Mom Made Me a Better CrossFitter

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition was chalked up while watching this CrossFit Elk Grove mom find a way to finish her WOD even though her baby is being crabby.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX

Josh Bridges, do you think it’s time to get a new pair of Metcons? Maddie Shine, chalk looks good on you (we obviously love chalk). Dave Castro, you dropping another movement hint for the CrossFit Open? Ever wonder what it’s like to work at a CrossFit box? Let us introduce you to CrossFit Jääkarhu. Noah Ohlsen says winning the 2016 CrossFit Open wasn’t worth “an underwhelming performance at the CrossFit Games.” When GHD sit-ups are too easy, you do this if you’re Talayna Fortunato. Carly Fuhrer does 13.3 for the first time and would have been 2nd in the world with her score.

CHALK UP READS

Before I had my son, I had all the time in the world to work out. I could do it anytime, twice a day if I wanted. I had been a runner for years and started CrossFit in 2012 after hearing about the craze. I wasn’t sure I would like it, as I’d never done serious weightlifting in my life. But I quickly found love in the box! It was fast, varied, competitive, challenging and best of all, fun.

And though I got the hang of it, I could never seem to improve much. I felt like that’s “just the way it is” for me — impossible to gain strength or speed in the gym. The thrill of a heart pumping WOD was basically enough but there was always a hopeless longing to actually get stronger.

I was finally able to get back to CrossFit when Jacob was 5 months old. I felt SO rusty, like I couldn’t remember how to do a back squat and box jumps freaked me out. I hadn’t been this weak in years. So how is it that 9 months later, I was in the best shape of my life, able to lift and perform better than ever before?

“My Journey With CrossFit Mayview” by Kimberly Herward

I walked into Crossfit Mayview for the first time in October 2015. Like many people, I was feeling a bit intimidated and very out of shape.

My knees were bruised. My arms were sore. And all I wanted to do was come back again the next day. That first workout sparked something in me. It awoke that athletic and competitive side of myself, but it was also the friendly faces and the cheers of these people who I just met.

I have always struggled with my body image. Crossfit began to change my perspective. I began to appreciate my body for all that it could do rather than putting it down for what I thought it lacked. Crossfit Mayview gave me a safe space where when I worried about how I looked it was only to make sure I was using proper form.
