QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Cops and soldiers are professional athletes. In fact, we argue that the physical preparedness required of military combat—and by extension law enforcement—matches and regularly surpasses that required of Olympic athletes.” — Greg Glassman, March 2003 in CrossFit Journal article “Police Training”

CAN CROSSFIT KICK THE INSULIN?

THE STORY.
We’ve all heard of a friend of a friend of a friend who once knew someone who kicked their diabetic meds after starting CrossFit. Thankfully research has gone a little beyond this sort of anecdotal evidence, so anyone with a (pre) diabetic friend or relative start taking notes.

The American Journal of Physiology followed 12 subject with Type 2 Diabetes over 6-weeks of CrossFit — 3 days per week — to see what effect high intensity training had on insulin production.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The results of the study were wildly positive; beta-cell function (and insulin production), liver function, and fitness levels were all significantly improved.

According to the study, “exercise at high-intensity for as little as 10 to 20 minute per day, three days a week for six weeks improves beta-cell function in adults with [type 2 diabetes]”.

HOW’D THIS COME ABOUT?
Someone you might have heard of before, who goes by the name of Julie Foucher was a part of this study during her first and second year of medical school. As far as she knows, it’s the first study to examine Type 2 diabetics doing CrossFit

Even though it was also a really limited study — only six weeks — and didn’t include the nutrition aspect of CrossFit, the study showed that CrossFit is safe for Type 2 diabetics and effective in improving beta cell function.

Conclusion…send this to your diabetic relative and let ’em know “what’s up.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT — USA Functional Fitness Federation has implemented a rule for challenging a judge’s call: $300. If the judges rule stands, the athlete loses the $300, but the money is refunded if it’s reversed. Sound familiar? Olympic sports like gymnastics and skiing have similar rules. The Barbell Spin has more on the story.

WHAT TO TELL YOUR FRIEND WHO INVITED THAT ‘ONE GUY’ OVER TO DINNER…

Does he answer to Sir Gregor Clegane, “The Mountain,” Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, or the World’s Strongest Man? CrossFit Amoskeag in Bedford, NH invited Hafþór to come over and teach a strongman course and throw some weight around with other giants. Naturally he said “why not,” provided there’s enough food to keep him happy. The event kicks off next Thursday, and even if you’re not a member you can still score a ticket.

WHAT TO TELL THAT POLICE OFFICER THAT JUST PULLED YOU OVER FOR SPEEDING…

Oh my, you look fit — do you workout? If you read today’s quote of the day you’ll know that from CrossFit’s early days Greg Glassman recognized the crossover appeal of functional high-intensity training to the real world challenges first responders face every day. It’s been catching on. George Ryan, a sergeant with a SoCal agency who was in SWAT for 17 years, penned an op-ed in Police Magazine on the importance of getting comfortable being uncomfortable, and CrossFit is a perfect way to start that journey. So share this piece with that cop friend who’s on the fence.
