QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Philistines may think that we were madmen indeed to go through such suffering and danger to arrive at this lonely spot. What did you hope to find up there, they may ask. Glory? Nobody cares about young fools who waste their best years in meaningless combats far from the eyes of the world. Fortune? Our clothes were in rags, and next day we would go back down to a life of slaving for the barest essentials. What we sought was the unbounded and essential joy that boils in the heart and penetrates every fiber of our being when, after long hours skirting the borders of death, we can again hug life to us with all our strength. Nietzsche defined it thus: ‘The secret of knowing the most fertile experiences and the greatest joys in life is to live dangerously.'” — Lionel Terray, after the first ascent of the northeast face of
the Col du Caiman, Alps, 1942

CANADA IS GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT NUTRITION LABELS.

The story.

In hopes of encouraging their citizens to make better choices while grocery shopping, Canada came up with a little something extra to help.

Details, please.

This proposal is part of Health Canada’s broader Healthy Eating Strategy. Under the proposal, packaged foods companies (with the exception of milk) would be required to place one of four proposed symbols on the front of their products.

The chosen symbol would highlight and draw attention to the nutrients that the Canadian government believes presents a concern to public health like sugar, saturated fat, and sodium.

Side note.

(Because we were curious, too), milk would be excluded from this requirement because the Canadian government believes the nutritional benefits of milk may be misrepresented through the symbols.

So, what now?

Want to donate your two cents? Canada is currently seeking feedback about the four different proposed symbols to be used. In fact, you don’t even have to be a citizen of Canada to complete the survey.

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to tell your friend who really hates Assault Bike WODs…

Gotta work on that. We’re in the final week of the CrossFit Open, and by now you’ve probably noticed a few weaknesses in your fitness game. That’s OK, that’s part of the Open and Weakness WOD is here to help. It’s kinda like the ROMWOD for accessory training and each day in 15 minutes or less. Programs are designed individually and your first month is 50% off with code “MORNINGCHALKUP” cause they like us so much.

What to tell your friend who just heard about the great-grandmother who started CrossFit cause she didn’t like having to use a walker…

She’s crushing it, just like Orville Rogers and Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins who, at 100 and 102-years-old, just set age group records in the 60m dash. We’re talking triple digits here people. No walkers, no canes, actual running. #LifeGoals

After his mother passed away of a heart attack in 2010, Nick Magliocco went off the rails. At 350 pounds, Magliocco was unhealthy and scared for his life. Luckily, his friend Jacqueline Dolan, an affiliate owner at Golden Phoenix CrossFit, came to his rescue.

CHALK UP COMMUNITY

  • JUST LAUNCHED — CrossFit Games masters athlete Gavin Tullos just launched PeakLife, a nutrition coaching company for both individuals and affiliates. In a release, Tullos said “Our mission is to help our members make the right choices in terms of diet and exercise; to understand why those choices are the best; and to offer tangible solutions to achieve those goals.”
  • SKI ERG TIP — The ski erg isn’t that complicated, but just like the rowing erg there are efficient and inefficient ways to ski and position your body. Erg expert Jane Erbacher walks through a few helpful tips on positioning with Tia-Clair Toomey that will help you out a ton on your next ski day.

CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)

FITAID dropped a new teaser-trailer for the Sara Sigmundsdottir docu-series due out soon • Kelsey Kiel hits a 275 pound (we think) split jerk PR • Serious question: how many CrossFitters does it take to measure for 18.4? • For all you avid handstand walkers out there, this cartoon probably sums up how all of your felt after the 18.4 announcement • Even though Carly Fuhrer is only doing the Open for fun this year, she still cycles 225 pound deadlifts faster than most dudes. BTW that’s 20 pounds heavier than the 205 pounds for RX ladies • Jamie Hagiya dropped into Riviera Elementary School last week and taught these kindergarteners how to do an air squatRogue Fitness just dropped a new commercial for the Concept2 BikeErg.

…and Frederik Aegidius’ reaction to the new HSPU standard sums up how many of us taller athletes are feeling right now.

Update on the 18.1 Score Controversy — So what ever happened to the two dudes who’s top 18.1 scores were invalidated then assessed a 15% penalty? Jonathan Varela is now ranked 171st in the West Region and squarely out of contention to qualify for Regionals. Malachi Bennett, however, is 29th in the West, six spots inside qualification and three spots ahead of Josh Bridges. This is as of 18.3, and includes the 74 rep penalty assessed to Bennett’s 18.1 score.

It’s going down for real, Today — For months, supplier to Whole Foods have been getting a little peeved since the big A took over. It’s all coming to a head at today’s vendors’ summit, where they’ll get to blow off some steam at top executives.

“Cancer Survivor Vs. Bone-Building Wife in 2018 Open” by Emily Beers, CrossFit Journal

In December 2014, Barb Brady was diagnosed with osteoporosis. In 2015, she suffered a spinal fracture of the eighth thoracic vertebra (T8).

“There was no acute injury. I didn’t fall or anything, but I ended up with a spontaneous fracture,” said Brady, now 67. “It took nearly a year to get through the pain.”

At the start of 2017, her husband Mike was diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer. He had surgery on March 30, 2017, to remove the cancerous tissue.

Cancer wasn’t his only health problem. At 6 feet and 225 lb., Mike had some weight to lose, and doctors worried about his rising blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

“I wasn’t that overweight but I had pounds to lose, and I was definitely very out of shape, there’s no doubt about it,” the 65-year-old said. “I had been retired for 11 years and hadn’t been very active. The whole thing with cancer was a wake-up call.”
