PREDICTING THE OPEN, PART 3
|
OK, what now?
So by now we’ve demonstrated our inability to accurately predict Open WODs. We’re not soothsayers, we just analyze past workouts to present a roadmap.
So with that, here’s what we’re thinking.
There are two scenarios: 18.4 is a repeat and 18.4 is not a repeat.
Scenario 1: 18.4 is NOT a repeat.
From Dave Castro’s tweet on Monday, “If you guys thought the first 3 tests were good. Wait until #18point4. That’s going to be something special,” it seems unlikely 18.4 is a repeat.
We analyzed all movements that have already been used in 2018 and crossed that with all movements ever used in the CrossFit Open. Assuming no repeated movements, the following remain and have been in at least 25% of all Open years:
Wall Balls — 100%
Thrusters — 100% (Final WOD of every Open)
Snatch — 100%
Chest to Bar — 100%
Deadlifts — 85.71%
Box Jumps — 71.43%
Barbell Clean — 57.14%
Barbell Clean and Jerk — 42.86%
Handstand Push-Ups — 42.86% (Every Open since first introduced in 2015 and always in week 4)
Shoulder to Overhead — 28.57%
We don’t know what the WOD will be, but there’s a very good chance that it will include one or more of those movements, aside from Thrusters which has always come in the final WOD.
Scenario 2: It’s a repeat.
Like we said, we don’t think it will be a repeat, but for academic purposes let’s look at all the possibilities.
-
Every repeat WOD since 2014 has come in the same week the WOD was first introduced (i.e. 14.1 is 11.1 and 15.2 is 14.2, etc.)
-
If we remove all movements already done in 2018, there are only seven WODs that can be repeated: 11.2, 11.3, 12.2, 13.2, 13.5, 14.3, 15.4, and 17.3.
-
The only week 4 WOD left is 15.4.
-
If Dave breaks from tradition, then we think 11.2, 11.3 and 12.2 are fairly unlikely; 11.2 because we’re not doing push-ups, 11.3 and 12.2 because they’re just 5 mins of squat clean and jerks and 10 minutes of snatches, respectively.
-
We think 13.2 and 17.3 are strong candidates for repeats.
So there you have it.

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS.
|
What to tell your friend who is switching from coffee to tea…
The water is close to boiling. For years, Coca-Cola has been operating below the surface, funding studies and research organizations ‘change the conversation’ when it comes to linking sugary beverages’ role in leading to obesity. A recent deep dive (paywall) into documents from Coca-Cola employees “reveal that Coca-Cola funded and supported the GEBN because it would serve as a ‘weapon’ to ‘change the conversation’ about obesity amidst a ‘growing war between the public health community and private industry’. Despite its close links to the Coca-Cola company, the GEBN was to be portrayed as an ‘honest broker’ in this ‘war’.” Long story short, you’re going to start hearing a lot more
about this soon.
What to tell your friend who’s tired of listening to ads on the radio…
Go premium bro. During Dakota Rager’s epic #1 worldwide performance of 18.3, where he was one of only two athletes to finish btw, his Spotify stopped playing to serve up some ads. That’s cause Sea Monkey CrossFit doesn’t have Spotify premium. So FloElite setup a GoFundMe to support one month of premium Spotify service so Dakota can crush more WODs without being sold Serta mattresses at the same time.

OP-ED: ATHLETIC BODIES ARE BEAUTIFUL — Sophia Sanchez, a freshman pre-med and psychology double major at the University of Nebraska, argues in her school paper that both genders should be celebrated for more musclar and fit bodies, not just men.
CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)
If you’re still feeling down about 18.3, here are seven things that will make you feel up • Stefi Cohen back squats 397 pounds for a double • Happy belated birthday to Margaux Alvarez.
Introducing the Lift Love Project — What started originally as an after school teen youth program in Atlanta, GA has now grown into a non-profit with the mission to bring CrossFit to kids across America in low income and underserved communities. Their next mission will travel to Palmer, AK into a community with extremely limited options for kids who’s parents are often gone days at a time to work in nearby cities. The city is also without daylight six months of the year. Their goal is to plant a year-round program so these kids can have a safe place to be challenged physically and grow in a community. And to help make this happen, they’re throwing a nationwide fundraising event called WOD Across America, which any box can join in and support.

“Why Paraplegic Shouldn’t ‘Scale’ Squat Workout” by Andréa Maria Cecil, CrossFit Journal
The question for coaches is not if they will ever work with an adaptive athlete but when—whether the impairment is a broken wrist or a viral infection that will improve with time or a congenital disorder or combat trauma that remains forever.
CrossFit Inc.’s six-month-old Adaptive Training Course provides trainers with specific strategies and methods for working with such populations so these athletes, too, can increase their work capacity.
Among those who purvey the course’s message is Kevin Ogar, who in March 2015 became the first adaptive athlete to join CrossFit’s Level 1 Seminar Staff. More than two years later, Ogar also joined CrossFit’s Adaptive Training Course Seminar Staff.
