Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition was chalked up while Monday is about as awesome as this video of Dimitry Klokov riding a mechanical horse.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX

Dani Horan overhead squats 205 pounds for three reps from the ground. To put that in perspective, the female weight for overhead squats in Event 6 at the 2016 Regionals was only 155 pounds. Here’s the full list of winners and honorable mentions from the 2017 CrossFit video contest. When you only have a few minutes in your math conference schedule, you pull your old PR for a double wearing street clothes. British Olympic weightlifter Sonny Webster power cleans and squat jerks 352 pounds. Chelsey Grigsby hits a 220 pound push jerk PR.

Meet Danielle Beaudreault, who just qualified for her first Regionals. She saw CrossFit on TV and decided she wanted to be strong like these women: “I saw these girls on TV doing CrossFit. They were strong and doing a ton of pull-ups and lifting a lot of weight. I thought they were beautiful. The hard work really attracted me to the sport. I found a gym in the area and fell in love.”

ONLINE QUALIFIER

All scores must be submitted online by tonight at 5PM Pacific. Fifteen year old Morgan Iverson finished WOD #3 in 2:48Sam Briggs completed the qualifier over the weekend at InnerFight CrossFit in Dubai.

CHALK UP AFFILIATES

Matt Allen, a 28-year-old coach CrossFit Counter Culture in Encinitas, CA is undergoing many tests and treatments in order to diagnose what’s wrong with him. Right now doctors believe he’s showing signs of early Parkinson’s disease. Matt’s condition has progressed so rapidly that he is unable to work and is currently on disability. The Counter Culture community is rallying behind their friend to raise money to help him pay for these medical bills and other expenses while he’s out of work.

“WOD-Proof Makeup” by Hilary Achauer, CrossFit Journal

In 2015 I interviewed five-time CrossFit Games competitor Elisabeth Akinwale for “Frailty, Thy Name is Woman?” In the course of our conversation about how CrossFit has helped change the idea that women are the weaker sex, Akinwale said something that didn’t make it into the article but stuck with me: She told me she got tired of worrying about her appearance while competing, so she didn’t wear any makeup at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games.

“And then when I saw any pictures, I was like, ‘Oh, damn it. Why didn’t I put the makeup on?’ Because I didn’t like it,” she said. So in 2015, she wore makeup at the Games, as did many of her fellow female competitors.

“People are in full makeup, like lashes and everything. People care. They are still typical women. You want to feel a certain way about yourself and look a certain way. I think when you feel like you look good, you perform, and it helps your mood. It helps you perform,” she said.
