Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition is sponsored by Wodapalooza Online Challenge, an online competition to test your fitness against the community, and step 1 to earning a spot to compete in Miami!
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“He who is good at making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” — Ben Franklin
HARVEY HEALING.
THE CROSSFIT COMMUNITY MOBILIZES.
Putting the Life in LIFEAID…Yesterday, LIFEAID President Aaron Hinde sent an email out to staff pledging to match dollar-for-dollar any employee contributions to Harvey relief efforts. According to an email Morning Chalk Up obtained, in just 24 hours $3,240 was collectively sent to relief efforts like Houston Food Bank, Houston SPCA and Texas Diaper Bank.
Faith Rx’D President Becky Conzelman…“We have 4 chapters in the Houston area and are praying for them and their community daily as we wait for Harvey to ease. We know many of you want to help, but may not know how. We have big plans in the works to help Houston rebuild for the long-haul.” Specifically, they’re planning to gather volunteers to total 1000 hours help Houston on the ground over the next six months.
CLEANING UP.
Dozens show up at CrossFit Central Houston and CrossFit Yellow Rose to help cleanup and repair the damage.
Kristie Barnett, coach at Vintage CrossFit was spotted leading kids at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston through a mini CrossFit class. The convention center is serving as a shelter for families displaced by Harvey.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX
Looks like Kara Webb is going to be an affiliate owner. Impressive…most impressive, Tiffany Szemplinski hitting 10 unbroken power cleans at 190 pounds.
Raise Them Up Strong, via Holly Mata, owner of Get Lifted CrossFit Kids…“Strong is beautiful and it’s awesome to see our youth strive to encompass strength in all aspects of their lives, not just physical appearance! That’s super important as they are challenged daily with finding themselves and figuring out who they want to be!!”
BarBend interviews Stefi Cohen after her World Record breaking 4x bodyweight deadlift…“I think a lot of people miss the fact that no athlete in the world trains the same way 365 days a year. A football player doesn’t train for a football game all year round, they have times they build up aerobic capacity, times for strength, for some rehab stuff, and so on. People think that the only way you can get better is through squat, bench, and deadlift, but they’re missing the point. The person who wins the race or the meet is the person who can last the longest…You need to be able to last, and cardio and accessory movements and circuit training, all those things can help you in the long run. And you need to add them into your training.”

Pulling for our little heroes…
Five years ago, Calavera Barbell and CrossFit Initiative put together a fundraiser for the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. You see, there are an estimated 15,000 plus children diagnosed with cancer each year.
“The first year, we thought it would be cool if we could raise a few thousand dollars,” said Ty Lones, co-owner of CrossFit Initiative. “When the dust settled we had raised about $6k. But the event has grown year over year.”
Last year, was their biggest haul yet: $37,000.
Since then, Jenny Arthur and Norik Vardanian have become involved. This year, they came to Reno and ran a 1-day lifting seminar and raised $1500 for the NNCCF.
“Every cent goes to charity and it is something the entire CrossFit and Weightlifting community in Northern Nevada and Northern California rallies around,” Lones continues. “It feels incredible to see so much love, support, time, and money being given to those that really need it. In the darkest hours, when you find out your child is likely to die of cancer, it is some consolation that people you’ve never met have dedicated so much of their time and resources to support you and your loved ones.”
Pulling for Our Little Heroes 2017 is scheduled for September 5 – 9. Even if you can’t compete you can still support and donate.
