Affiliate Owner Lindsey Grasis Launches Fundraiser for Sexual Assault Awareness and Shares Her Story to Help Others
Lindsey Grasis, affiliate owner of CrossFit 1977, opened up on Instagram last week about her sexual assault story and is looking to raise money to help support survivors and their families.
Her story: Nine years ago, while studying abroad in Puerto Rico, her junior year of college, Grasis was sexually assaulted by a security guard who worked at the hotel where she was staying.
“I did press charges, and I did fight it in court,” she said in a video on Instagram. “It took nearly two years, flying back and forth to Puerto Rico, to get this man behind bars.”
Although Grasis ended up winning the case, she understands how difficult it is for survivors to speak up.
“You’re treated like you are the criminal,” she said.
One big thing: Grasis began speaking about her sexual assault openly on social media one year later after her college asked her to speak at a sexual assault awareness event they were holding.
When she finished speaking, five to seven other students walked up to the stage to share their stories too. That is when Grasis knew that she needed to share her story with more people.
That’s exactly what Dena Garner, Ph.D. first thought when her research started to show the enormous impact a mouthpiece could have on breathing during workouts. Like all good scientists though, she then spent years trying to disprove her findings. But she couldn’t.
In fact, she found even more evidence that using an AIRWAAV Performance Mouthpiece during workouts increases endurance, recovery, and even strength.

Fraser Teases a Return: On the Josh Mat Sevan podcast last week, Mat Fraser talked about retirement and whether it would be possible for an elite athlete to return to competition after a year off.
Mat Fraser: “Let’s say you take a year off, now you have 24 months before the next games. So let’s say you have 18 months before your next competition like the Open or something. You have 18 months to do nothing but base building. What type of superhuman would you come back as? That’d be amazing.”

Nichole DeHart: From CrossFit Kid to Veteran Professional Coach
It was 2004: Nichole DeHart was a high school student who was passionate about Krav Maga. Like most people at the time, she had never heard of CrossFit.
Then one day, Jeff and Mikki Martin, who at the time owned CrossFit Brand X in Ramona, CA and were in the process of developing CrossFit Kids, saw DeHart and “kind of tricked me into doing CrossFit,” said DeHart, now 35, of how she became one of the original CrossFit Kids.
Had someone told her back then that 17 years later she would have a very successful career at the world-renowned CrossFit Invictus in San Diego, CA, DeHart said she never would have believed it. After all, nobody even knew what CrossFit was.
What happened next: In the years that followed, DeHart started helping CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman and his wife at the time, Lauren Glassman, at various CrossFit Kids seminars, and in 2007, at the age of 21, she showed up in the Aromas, CA and threw her name in the hat — there was no qualification process back then — to compete at the first ever CrossFit Games. She placed third.
