QUOTE OF THE DAY

“No man had the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” — Socrates

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX

Dave Castro announced that CrossFit is building their own custom obstacle course. FLASHBACK to the 2012 obstacle course event, where Spencer Hendel and Talayna Fortunato smashed it with a time of 33.1 and 43.39 seconds, respectively. However, we’d be shocked if Castro and crew made it that quick of an event this time around.

More 2017 CrossFit Games gear has hit the CrossFit Store. Maddy Myers snatches 205 pounds from the blocks. Brooke Wells is looking really, really lean and strong right now. Some weightlifter jumps onto 24 plates stacked almost as tall as he is. Kristi Eramo continues getting uncomfortable with her odd object training. Justin King, coach at Slinging Iron CrossFit and first time 35-39 Masters Games athlete, took first in the Rx division at the Summer Partner Throwdown this weekend. Mission 6 Nutrition added new flavors sour apple, peanut butter and chocolate bomb. Ilya Ilyin clean and squat jerks 540 pounds, which Hookgrip says it’s likely “the heaviest clean and squat jerk ever made in the history of weightlifting.” “Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness” is now streaming on Netflix.

Meet 61-year-old dentist David Hippensteel, the reigning champion of the Master 60+ division and heading into his fifth CrossFit Games.

Jared Enderton on leaving The Dark Orchestra to become Invictus’ new head coach of weightlifting…“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I have decided to leave The Dark Orchestra. Jon North & I have been friends since 2011 at Cal Strength & we started TeamDO in 2014. Years of learning, slamming bars & a ton of fun. These past 3-4 years running TeamDO were some of the best years of my life. I owe a lot to Jon & Jess as they brought me on to the Weightlifting Talk podcast & even gave me a shot at running TeamDO alongside them. Jon & I will continue to be friends, but, we both agreed it was best if we went our own ways from a business standpoint. TeamDO will always hold a special place in my heart & I wish you guys nothing but the best in your future endeavors!”

WHAT TO TELL YOUR FIFTH GRADE TEACHER WHEN YOU SEE HER GETTING FIT ON INSTA…

You show her some love of course. “THATS MY FIFTH AND THIRD GRADE TEACHER. SO PROUD OF YOU,” Cameron Danyov commented when he saw a video of his fifth grade teacher conquering her fear of box jumps. Chrissy Pope works out at CrossFit Port Royal Sound and showed up on Friday and said “let’s do this thing.”

STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?
“I am a 56-year-old kindergarten teacher. I was overweight when I fell skiing and needed an ACL replacement. My daughter who is a CrossFit athlete convinced me to do the 12 Bootcamp. I lost 20 pounds then joined the CrossFit side a year ago and lost 25 more Pounds. 45 in total which is a lot for a 5 foot tall lady. I participated in the CrossFit Open this year and had a blast. I am deep down very competitive I think. The wonderful encouragement weekly has made me so strong. It has truly changed my life.” — Donna Hartline, CrossFit Force in Windsor, CA. “Chronic Disease: The Rising Tide” by Jason Cooper, CrossFit Journal

“Cooper, you are getting a patient from the ER,” the charge nurse said. “Cool. What do we have?” “Twenty-one-year-old female in DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). She’s critical.” “Shit. Seriously, man?”
Please don’t code. Please. Please, God, help me stop this.

A “code” is short for a “code blue,” which is applied to any event that leads to respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest. This young lady was about to experience both, resulting in CPR. Her gray pallor and all her other clinical symptoms let me know she was close to coding.

“A Day in the Life of the Second Fittest Woman on Earth” by PopSugar

To be crowned the Second Fittest Woman on Earth is an impressive title and one that 23-year-old Tia-Clair Toomey is very humble about. The Australian weightlifter scored the label after coming second as a rookie in the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games, a placing she secured again in 2016 — while qualifying for the Rio Olympics in weightlifting, mind you — proving to critics that she’s the real deal and her success as a rookie was 100 percent not a fluke.

Competing in CrossFit competitions wasn’t something Tia had planned on, as CrossFit was just a way to improve her fitness. It wasn’t until she heard about the CrossFit Games that she set herself a goal and, just quietly, smashed it! This year her approach is different, with her sights firmly set on taking top spot.

As she prepares for the 2017 competition, we caught up with Tia to talk about what a day in the life of one of the world’s fittest females looks like.
