Brandi Darby Becomes First Blind Lifter to Podium at National USAW Meet
|
The story?
Hello roadblocks and barriers. You obviously haven’t met 36-year-old Brandi Darby, who just became the first blind athlete to place in a USA Weightlifting sanctioned competition, earning a silver and two bronze medals in the women’s over 35 category.
In July, while our heads were turned towards the Games, Darby competed in the 90kg weight class at the American Open Series 2 in Valley Forge, PA. She finished with a 65kg/143 pounds snatch and 70kg/154 pounds clean and jerk, which earned her third-place overall.
How?
Just like most of us, Darby came to weightlifting via CrossFit. While taking CrossFit classes in college, one day Darby came in and saw an 800 meter run on the board and “died a little inside.” Instead of the run, she walked over to the Olympic lifting class and it was “love at first lift.”
“There are a lot of us who don’t have the confidence to try this or any sport because the challenges seem bigger than the possibilities,” Darby told USA Weightlifting.
What’s next?
TBD on that, but get this: she’s only been competing since February.

“How Old Were You When You Started Disliking Your Body?” by Sunny Sea Gold, The Greatist
It’s not insane for tween girls to have a bit of body weirdness, age nine or ten is when average girls start putting on puberty weight and hormones really start pumping. That’s also when friends and media start to become more influential in kids’ lives.
But body worries are starting earlier and earlier, experts say. Nearly half of the three – to six-year-olds in a 2010 study of more than 100 girls “worried” about being fat, and about one-third wanted to change something about their appearance. Earlier studies found that many kids are aware of “dieting” by age 6 and may even have tried it.
We’ve got to watch what we say in front of children, our own or otherwise. If they see us poking and prodding and picking apart, of course they’re going to do the same. We’ve got to stop publicly picking apart and/or celebrating famous people for their weight gain or losses. Weight shifts are normal for human beings, and we all have them.
Finally, we’ve got to push back against the widespread assumption that thin equals healthy and fat equals sick. Bodies naturally comes in different shapes and sizes, and that’s the way it should be.
We’ve got to do better than this, people. For our own sakes, and for all the girls who will come after us. How? We’ve got to reject diet culture—the cleanses, and the pills, and the companies that make millions by making us feel like we’re not OK as we are now. Don’t sign up, don’t give them your money, don’t make what they do so profitable.
