Wodapalooza Gains Sanctioned Status
|
What happened?
Yesterday, CrossFit HQ announced that Wodapalooza 2019 will be an official sanctioned event and qualify one male, female and team to the 2019 CrossFit Games. It’ll now be known as the Wodapalooza CrossFit Festival.
This has been happening a lot lately.
Wodapalooza is the 7th official CrossFit sanctioned event to be announced in recent weeks. These sanctioned events are part of major changes to how athletes qualify for the CrossFit Games. And because of the rapid expansion of CrossFit across the globe, four of the seven sanctioned events so far will be hosted overseas.
FUN FACT: There are now more CrossFit affiliates in other countries than in the United States.
Who gets to compete?
Wodapalooza is one of the most inclusive competitions out there with nearly 1600 competitors and 40 divisions. And you can snag 20% off your registration today with code “WZACHALKUP18.” The online qualifier for individuals kicks off tomorrow.
For the elite athletes, there are three ways to qualify:
-
The top 20 athletes from the online qualifier will earn a spot.
-
The top 20 male and female athletes from the 2018 CrossFit Games will receive an invitation to skip the qualifier and go directly to Wodapalooza.
-
The past winners of Wodapalooza will get invites, but it’s still TBD on how far back these invites will go.
Elite/Pro teams can also request an invite.
Anything else?
In addition, CrossFit also further clarified what happens when an athlete who has already qualified for the CrossFit Games takes the top spot at a sanctioned event:
“As with all CrossFit-sanctioned events in the 2019 Games season, should the top male or female athlete at Wodapalooza qualify for the CrossFit Games by other means, then the number two podium finisher will receive a Games invitation,” CrossFit said in a press release.

Dubai CrossFit Championship Sends Out Invites to Past Winners
|
What happened?
Over the weekend, the Dubai CrossFit Championship sent out invitations to all previous winners, the Morning Chalk Up has learned.
Oh, invites are fancy.
Up until last week, all athletes were required to complete the online qualifier in order to secure a spot for the first sanctioned event. This announcement comes just two days before the start of the three-week online qualifier which will narrow the field down to the top 37 male and female athletes, and 10 teams.
So who got one?
Noah Ohlsen, Mathew Fraser, Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson, Annie Thorisdottir and Sara Sigmundsdottir all received an invitation to bypass the online qualifier and compete at the finals in December. The reason there are only two females is because Annie won in 2015 and 2017.
We previously reported that Sara Sigmundsdottir was registered for the online qualifier. It seems likely that she will accept her invitation.
Athletes have until October 7th to accept or decline their invitation and we’ll update you as we confirm.

What to tell your swolemate the next time he miscalculates the weight on his bar, again…
Barbell math. It’s the 11th general physical skill of CrossFit. Well, thanks to this handy dandy new website, Barbell Math, you don’t have to fuss with adding up all those 10s you have stacked on the barbell. All you have to do is select the plates you already have on the bar when you get that big PR and Barbell Math adds it up for you. Done and done.
What to tell your teammate now that the 2018 CrossFit Team Series has wrapped up…
Rest up, buttercup. Especially now that the season is changing this is a great time to focus on recovery for a hot minute. And we mean actual recovery like meal prepping, sleep, massage, meditation, socializing and believe it or not, doing nothing or lying on the couch watching your favorite series.

“Adapting is Not Scaling,” by Andréa Maria Cecil, CrossFit Journal
Imagine you could never do a CrossFit workout as prescribed. Ever.
How would you feel?
“Say I did Murph Rx and I finish in 40 minutes,” offered Marissa McGuirk, a member of CrossFit Inc.’s Adaptive Training Course Seminar Staff.
And say another athlete finishes Murph in 35 minutes with jumping pull-ups. But instead of meeting accolades with pride, the athlete feels defeated.
“Yeah, but I scaled,” might be the athlete’s response to a compliment.
To which McGuirk would say, “OK, you still worked out to the limits of your physical and psychological tolerances. So, you still did awesome.”
She continued: “Imagine if someone, every single day for their entire fitness journey is always gonna (say), ‘Oh, but I scaled.’ That’s the feeling (they have) when they leave the gym every single day.”
This is why McGuirk and other members of the course’s staff emphasize the difference between scaling a workout and adapting it. While both actions are modifications, they can have dramatically different effects.
