Morning Chalk Up

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Dr. Julie Foucher-Urcuyo has been an ambassador for the sport and community of CrossFit, and she is a physician currently practicing in the United States; she provides a summary of our current reality and issues a call to action to all CrossFitters. And, it was another day of fast and furious news surrounding the Sanctional season, full recaps below. Today:

  • Dr. Julie Foucher-Urcuyo says our moment is now.
  • The Down Under CrossFit Championship and the International Online Qualifier #2 are postponed and rescheduled.
  • “The Fittest” documentary gets an early release if it generates enough pre-orders (and it’s on sale now!).

If your gym has been closed or plans to close as a result of the coronavirus, please let us know.

We are hearing from athletes and affiliate owners all across the global CrossFit community. Please keep your PRs, at-home WODs and story tips coming our way at [email protected].

Breaking: Potential Early Release For The Fittest Documentary

Breaking: Potential Early Release For The Fittest Documentary

Some good news just came down the pipe for members of the CrossFit community currently in quarantine due to the COVID-19.

The Morning Chalk Up has just learned that the distributor for the long-awaited documentary The Fittest has agreed to release the film early on iTunes and AppleTV after it was originally scheduled to be released on April 7.

Ok, what’s the catch: In order for the film to be released early by the distributor, the film needs to meet a certain threshold of pre-order sales to account for the adjustment in schedule.

  • Roughly 9,000 more pre-orders are needed in order to meet the threshold designated by the film’s distributor and give the CrossFit community something to help ease the transition into quarantine and shelter in place orders that are being put into effect across the globe.

Even better, they’ve lowered the pre-order price of the movie as part of a special sale, dropping the price from $12.99 to $6.99 for the time being. So even if an earlier release date wasn’t enough, a reduction in price certainly sweetens the pot.

  • After seeing the film during a special screening at Wodapalooza, we’ve put together a Viewer’s Guide (to be published at the Morning Chalk Up along with the film’s release).

Why this matters: The world is in a very weird place right now. For members of the CrossFit community, our affiliates and training has often been a therapeutic safe haven, serving as a source of balance and health in our lives. The same can be said about sports in general for the broader population, as it can be a nice distraction from the current state of affairs.

With essentially every sports season on hold and most affiliates closed for the foreseeable future, an early release of the film at almost a 50% discount would be a win in our books.

Let’s do this: You can pre-order the film via iTunes here.

Down Under CrossFit Championship Postponed

  Down Under CrossFit Championship Postponed

The latest Sanctional domino has fallen due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Down Under CrossFit Championship announced Monday that it would be postponing the event. The confirmed new date is July 3-5, 2020.

One big thing: Given the current landscape of the pandemic, the announcement should come as no surprise, however the chosen new date for the event means that more Sanctionals will be stacked up during the same handful of weekends in June and July.

  • The weekend of July 3-5 will now play host to three separate events — the originally scheduled Mayan CrossFit Classic, the recently added Asia CrossFit Championship, and now the Down Under CrossFit Championship.
  • June 26-28 will also host three events — the originally scheduled CrossFit French Throwdown, along with the rescheduled Reykjavik CrossFit Championship and Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge.

The total number now is 8: That’s how many Sanctionals have been postponed and/or rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a strong likelihood that more could follow suit in the coming weeks.

  • CrossFit Inc. issued a letter Monday to all affiliates and the community, encouraging affiliates to reach out with concerns, and pledging to support affiliates by alleviating the financial burdens of affiliate fees in areas with government-mandated shutdowns.

The Morning Chalk Up is continuing to monitor the situation with all Sanctioned events, and the latest up to date schedule can be found here.

New Dates Announced for International Online Qualifier #2

New Dates Announced for International Online Qualifier #2

The four Sanctionals that use the second International Online Qualifier (IOQ2) for their events have announced a postponement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The IOQ2 will now take place April 6-15 for athletes looking to compete at The Asbury Park Summer Games and the Loud And Live Sanctionals (Madrid CrossFit Championship, Mayan CrossFit Classic and Granite Games).

The bottom line: The IOQ2 will now start two weeks later than the original date, which was March 23.

  • With many gyms shuttering their doors due to government-mandated restrictions and closures, athletes registered to compete in the IOQ2 would have found it difficult to do the prescribed workouts.
  • As of now, none of the four Sanctionals participating in IOQ2 has announced any changes to their competition dates. All are monitoring the COVID-19 situations daily and will announce any changes on their official websites and social media platforms.
  • For those interested, the Morning Chalk Up breaks down the IOQ2 for those seeking to compete at any of the four Sanctionals for their 2020 CrossFit Games invitations.

COMMUNITY

At-Home Workouts and Affiliate Updates

We are going to continue in our effort to be a clearinghouse of information about at-home programs and other news and notes from around the affiliate community.

  • A quick note at the outset, this is a constantly developing situation, and we’ve received a ton of feedback and examples of at-home programming and more. We will continue rolling some out every few days to give readers lots of options for switching things up and keeping it fresh. We will also try to include other brief notes when and where was can.
  • Coach Mike Burgener: Coach B encourages those working out at home to check the Burgener Strength website and follow the daily GEEZER workout, which is designed for individuals to complete with whatever tools they have available. It’s free and athletes can reach out if they have questions.
  • NOBULL: The shoe and apparel company is asking athletes to submit videos of their at-home workouts, noting in an email: “Show us how you’re still putting in the work! Now more than ever, we need to stay connected and keep moving. Share with us your home workout of the day. Each day we’ll be sharing workouts created by the community that you can do at home. Don’t stop putting in the work and we won’t either.”
  • Will Powell: The three-time Masters-level “Fittest on Man on Earth” (and unofficial winner of 2020 AGOQ for men 60+) wrote in to describe he does farm work including harvesting and processing wood every other weekend and hits at least one pool and one track workout per week to keep his fitness fresh and functional. These are all options (depending on pool closures) for outside-the-gym fitness
  • Training Think Tank: TTT is offering free at-home programming through a new Instagram account called “TTT at Home.” The workouts are designed for athletes of all levels to be done at home with no specific equipment.
  • CrossFit Clintonville and CrossFit Bexley: Box owners Patrick Woods and Brian Peterson are offering at-home WODs and tracking data for their athletes through SugarWOD while offering video tutorials and coaching through Facebook.
  • Festivus Games: The international beginner’s CrossFit competition was set to take place on April 18 in over 150 gyms, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, it has been rescheduled for September 19, 2020.
  • Wodify: Gym software company Wodify has created a “Coronavirus/COVID-19: Guide for Gym Owners” resource that consolidates a lot of good materials to help manage their businesses through the challenges presented by this outbreak.
