How to Watch 20.1 + Expert Predictions

The 2020 CrossFit Games Open is here! For the tenth time, the global CrossFit community will gather for another round of Open announcements and athlete matchups, before trying their hand at the batch of five workouts revealed over the next five weeks.

Every week there will be multiple announcements taking place in a variety of languages across the world, each with their unique matchup of athletes throwing down to set the stage performance-wise for the workout.

Over the next five weeks, we’ll be breaking down each matchup and keeping you up to date with how to watch, along with analysis of each athlete pairing from our team of experts that include our Editor-in-Chief Justin Lofranco, CrossFit Games play-by-play announcer Brandon Domingue, and Staff Writer and CrossFit Games analyst Tommy Marquez.

Rich Froning vs. Scott Panchik presented by Rogue

  • Location: Austin, Texas
  • Start time: A special edition of the Rogue Iron Game show will precede the announcement at 4:30 PM PST with the workout to follow at 5:00 PM PST.
  • How to watch: The Rogue Iron Game show and announcement will stream live via the Rogue website here, along with the Games website.
  • Background: A matchup of all-time greats on the men’s side, Froning (10th) and Panchik (11th) finished next to each other on the overall leaderboard in the 2019 Open. Although this is the first time they’ll go head-to-head, they’re no stranger to Open announcements, with Froning having 4 under his belt, and Panchik 5. Rumors of Panchik potentially forgoing the individual competition to join Froning and the CrossFit Mayhem team, make this matchup even more intriguing.

Complaints Continue: Staff Unpaid at Southwest Championship

Former staff has spoken out after the Morning Chalk Up revealed athletes and volunteers are still waiting on prizes and compensation from organizer Chaco Comrie.

The story so far.

No cash for the Competition Director

Jason Jannetti has been a respected CrossFit judge since 2016, judging at the Games, Central Regionals and on the Open video review team.

Also an affiliate owner, Jannetti was recruited as the Competition Director for the Southwest Championship, posting a scathing video to social media outlining the shortcomings with the event’s management, in particular, Chaco Comrie.

“He made it sound like it was going to be something worthwhile,” Jannetti said in his Facebook video.

“He didn’t execute on any of the **** he told anyone they were going to get.”

“Make the Open Work for You,” by Alyssa Royse, Morning Chalk Up

Our Intramural Open has always been huge at Rocket CrossFit. But we didn’t use to push people to register online because, like many people, we mistakenly believed that the point of the Open was to qualify for the Games, and we knew we weren’t going to do that. The last Open was the first one that we encouraged online registration. That was a game-changer.

Charla, a 62-year-old member who doesn’t have a history of athletics at all, registered for the Open for the first time last year. She wound up ranked #26 in her scaled division, which blew her mind.

“I went to bed many times, laughing and feeling the warmth of all the good cheer from my fellow Rocketeers – that is the afterglow of the Open,” Charla said.

I know people are grumbling that we just did it, and that it’s football season, and … People just grumble. At Rocket CrossFit, we’re ready. Although we literally have 100% participation in the Open, it requires little or no extra effort on our part. Really.

How do we have 100% participation? We just run it as a class, but with bonus costumes. We also run it as intramural teams, but members still just work out on their own schedule, which fills the classes with costumes and friendly competition, so everyone feels the energy. That, more than anything, creates excitement all day long and increases participation for the next time.
