Meet Dave Hippensteel, the Ultimate CrossFit Master


When you think of Masters CrossFit athletes, one man stands head-and-shoulders above the rest: Dave Hippensteel. At sixty-three-years-old, Hippensteel is a husband, father, and dentist, and a staunch competitor in CrossFit, his name usually found at the top of the leaderboard. His strength, endurance and gymnastic abilities are unparalleled.

Hippensteel has notched three consecutive CrossFit Games championships (2016 – 2018) in seven total appearances. He was also the oldest athlete at the 2019 CrossFit Games. Throughout his career, he’s won the third most Open WODs of a masters athlete (10) and tied for third-most AGOQ event wins with six.

He started young.

Hippensteel has always been active, though he didn’t always want to play sports. As a teen, his father encouraged him to pursue sports as a way to burn off his childish energy. But in high school, Hippensteel ran football and track and played football, catching that competitive bug that still hasn’t let go.

He left home for Cal State University Fresno, where he did decathlon and diving, then on to Graduate School at Temple University to study dentistry, as well as discover his love for triathlons.

In his forties, Hippensteel raced motocross competitively for five years before returning to triathlons. He admits that the call to ride again is ever prevalent, though, saying that the track calls to him, even now.

But in 2012, at age 56, Hippensteel was introduced to CrossFit by his daughter, Heather, who would go on to join him at the CrossFit Games.

“I found it first, and I was like oh my gosh my dad would love this. So when I was first doing it, I told him about it and obviously he tried it and it really just lit a fire,” Heather told Morning Chalk Up. “So it was really cool because even when we both first started, I had just graduated college and was living at home in Tennessee for the summer, and so he and I did CrossFit together all summer.”

Filthy 150 Announces First Super Team Invite of the Season


The first new super team for the 2020 season was revealed Saturday as the first elite team invite to the Filthy 150. Known only as “Nation,” the roster includes individual Games athletes Craig Kenney, Paul Tremblay, Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault, and Jenn Smith. 

One big thing: We fully expect there to be a massive reorganization among elite team rosters not only from the 2019 CrossFit Games but during the season. For starters, last season was the first time athletes could train in different locations and compete together — AKA the beginning of “super teams” so naturally there was going to be a lot of athletes feeling it out. Second, with 27 Sanctionals qualifying teams, nearly twice as many as last year, there are more opportunities for top talent to join forces and get to the Games.

  • We have yet to hear of a single team planning the same roster for the 2019-2020 season. 
  • How super (experienced) are the super teams? 11 of the 12 athletes that made up the rosters of the podium teams at the Games had previous individual Games experience. 

Team Nation at a Glance

This announcement immediately puts the rest of the field in Dublin on notice, as the Nation roster brings a ton of experience in both the team and individual competition.

  • Kenney and Smith both competed on teams at the 2019 Games, with Kenney’s Invictus Boston team finishing 12th and Smith’s team Don’t Stop finished 6th.
  • Tremblay and Reason-Thibault both represented Canada on teams of four the Invitational. Tremblay did so first in 2014, and Reason-Thibault competed twice in 2016, and 2017.
  • Combined the team brings 11 years of individual experience at the CrossFit Games, with Reason-Thibault accounting for five of them.

“What Complaining About Rep Cutting Says About Your Character,” by Rachel Binette, Morning Chalk Up 

I read the op-ed “What Rep Cutting Says About Your Character,” I saw the re-posts, the internet applauding, and all I could think was, “Nononononono..”

Not because I disagree that rep cutting is bad.

But because, as a mindset coach with Mindset Rx’d, this op-ed misses the point. It misses why people cut their reps, it misses how character is developed and personal growth achieved. It also misses the opportunity that this issue presents to reflect on and build our own character.

Why do people cut reps?

Ultimately, the question really is, why do people cheat? We love to answer judgmentally — they cheat because they have a bad character, because they like taking shortcuts, because they’re unwilling to work hard enough to earn the spot.

But this is not the real reason. This is the reason we give ourselves so that we can soothe our egos and feel superior.

The reason people cheat is because they don’t believe that the effort they put in is good enough. They believe that they have to stack up in a certain place in order to be worthy. And because a desire for belonging and worthiness is critical to our sense of social safety, they are willing to cheat to get there. This applies to the CrossFit athlete at your local box, and it applies to the professional athlete in any sport.
