2020 CrossFit Games Online Stage: Event 3 and 4 Recap

2020 CrossFit Games Online Stage: Event 3 and 4 Recap

The first day of online competition is over for the 2020 CrossFit Games and after the craziness of the leaderboard for the opening two events, the Games universe somewhat corrected itself with the final two events. “Damn Diane” and a 1K row proved to be the separating workouts as 60 athletes jockeyed for a coveted top-five spot and invite to the Ranch in their respective divisions.

Women’s Division: In all actuality it’s 58 athletes that are jockeying as defending “Fittest” man and woman on Earth Mathew Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey looked to have the online stage championships secured. Toomey made it three wins in a row after winning “Damn Diane” with a time of 2:28. She showed glimpses of being mortal in the 1K row, finishing tied for sixth with a time of 3:21.30. Her overall lead jumped to 56 points however with three events to go on Saturday.

Tommy’s Top Takeaways: End Of Day One

Tommy’s Top Takeaways: End Of Day One

Day one of the 2020 CrossFit Games was certainly unorthodox, but provided plenty of drama as fans and members of the community anxiously awaited results and highlights from the first four tests of the weekend.

Day two action is underway already in Australia, but some big surprises have led to some interesting storylines going into the final day with three tests total in store.

Beloved CrossFit Coach and Seminar Staff Member, Kelly Brown, Succumbs to Cancer after Four-Year Battle

We have sad news to report as the first day of the 2020 CrossFit Games breaks. Kelly Brown, CF- L4 and subject matter expert in CrossFit Kids passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

Kelly began her CrossFit journey in 2006; in 2007 she and John, her husband opened their garage gym for their first clients. Her gym CrossFit Agoge benefited from her expertise as a Physical Therapist focusing on orthopedics, sports medicine and pediatrics. She served on the CrossFit Kids HQ staff for a decade.

From the Cross Training IG:

“Kelly is survived by her husband, John, and their two beautiful children, a 14-year-old son named Quinn and 11-year-old daughter named Wesleigh. An incredible wife, mother, teacher, coach, affiliate owner, and friend, Kelly contributed so much to all whose lives she touched, and her loss has rocked the CrossFit Kids’ Team, the CrossFit Training Department, and the CrossFit community as a whole. Kelly made everyone and everything she was involved in better. She will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.”

There is a GoFundMe page set up for her family. Please take a look and donate.

And the 2020 Games Athlete with the Best Love Story is…

Four years ago, rookie CrossFit Games athlete Adam Davidson took to Facebook asking if someone could pick him up from the airport in Victoria, BC.

  • “He posted saying he needed someone to pick him up in an hour. I live about an hour from the airport, so I was like, ‘Ok, I guess I’m leaving now,” said his now wife Kelsey, who was a stranger at the time.
  • “But my proposal to him was that he needed to return the favour and drop me off at the airport on Friday,” Kelsey told the Morning Chalk Up Friday, just after filming Adam do ‘Friendly Fran.’

Hold the phone: OK, so there’s a bit of a back story. According to Kelsey, Adam had a habit of adding attractive women to Facebook.

Taking Your Shoes Off to Lift

If you are squatting or deadlifting, ditch your shoes and give these drills a try. Ditching your shoes can help you feel the “tripod foot” where your big toe, pinky toe and heel connect directly to the ground. And, if your knees tend cave, definitely give the barefoot drills a try.

Good Read: Dave Castro “Confident” Online Competition Will Produce Top Five Men and Women

Yesterday, the South China Morning Post published a story written by Patrick Blennerhassett under the headline  “CrossFit Games 2020: Dave Castro ‘Confident’ Online Competition Will Produce Top Five Men and Women.” Here are a few excerpts from the story:

  • Blennerhassett: “CrossFit Games director Dave Castro has no hesitations that the events he has programmed will produce the best of the best, after fans and athletes deriding last year’s workouts for not testing a wide enough range of fitness.”
  • “The top five fittest men and women will advance to the next stage,” said Castro. “I am confident … any weaknesses these athletes have will be exposed by these workouts.”
  • “The online part of the 2020 competition is now under way, and features CrossFit Games staples like pull-ups, thrusters, one-rep max clean squats, dead lifts, rowing and overhead squats. Castro said he is hoping these seven events, which must be completed by the athletes within a specific time window, will also be an overall test of fitness.”
  • “I wanted to test their recovery and how they could stay engaged in multiple events,” Castro said.

There is a lot more in the piece itself, be sure to give it a read.
