First Davidsdottir, Now Toomey Exits Reebok

Last week, when NOBULL announced they’d stolen one of Reebok’s star athletes — Katrin Davidsdottir — from their lineup and it couldn’t have come at a worse time: the announcement came the day before Reebok was set to launch the Nano 9.0, their first update in nearly a year and five months.

Since the announcement, rumors have been circulating that Reebok would lose another headliner — Tia-Clair Toomey. Yesterday, Reebok confirmed that Toomey has left.

  • Reebok in a statement to Morning Chalk Up: “Tia is no longer under contract with Reebok. We were unable to reach agreement on terms of a new contract. We wish her the very best in the future.”
  • “We are fortunate to have some amazing CrossFit athletes on our roster such as Annie Thorisdottir, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, Rich Froning and Patrick Vellner, among others.  And, we’re always looking to partner with athletes who fit with the Reebok brand.”

What we’re hearing: Tia-Clair Toomey is also moving to NOBULL, though NOBULL declined to comment.

The impact on the podium. If Tia is added to the exodus roster, here’s what the 2018 CrossFit Games podium would look like today:

  • Men: 1). Mathew Fraser (Nike), 2). Patrick Vellner (Reebok), and 3). Lukas Hogberg (Nike).
  • Women: 1). Tia-Clair Toomey* (NOBULL), 2). Laura Horvath (Nike), and 3). Katrin Davidsdottir (NOBULL).

Flashback to 2014:

  • Men: 1). Rich Froning (Reebok), 2). Mathew Fraser (Nike), and 3). Jason Khalipa (Reebok).
  • Women: 1). Camille Leblanc-Bazinet (Reebok), 2). Annie Thorisdottir (Reebok), and 3). Julie Foucher (Reebok).

With CrossFit’s recent rule reversal that required athletes to only wear Reeboks at the Games, the fight for the podium is a fight to showcase your product on the biggest stage in our sport.

Big name athletes with podium potential by brand:

  • Nike: Mathew Fraser, Lukas Hogberg, Cole Sager, Jacob Heppner, Travis Mayer, Noah Ohlsen,  Willy Georges, Sara Sigmundsdottir, Laura Horvath, Thuri Helgadottir
  • Reebok: Patrick Vellner, Brent Fikowski, Alex Vigneault, Lukas Esslinger, Annie Thorisdottir, Maddie Sturt, Samantha Briggs, and Kristin Holte.
  • NOBULL: Katrin Davidsdottir, Tia-Clair Toomey and Brooke Wells.
  • Under Armour: Anna Fragkou
  • INOV-8: Dani Speegle

Christy Adkins on Pregnancy — Games athlete Christy Adkins took to Instagram to add to the conversation on pregnant athletes and sponsorships.

— “Conversations on pregnant female athletes and sponsorships have made me reflect on this recently. It seems our culture has finally started to embrace, celebrate and champion the female athlete…and now is the time to do the same for the prenatal and post-partum female athlete. Sport motivates and inspires. Following an athlete through her journey to becoming a Mom and how her expression of athleticism may evolve, speaks to so many, can motivate and inspire so many.

— “There is a certain level of excitement and trepidation when telling friends and family that you are pregnant. As an athlete, these emotions also apply when sharing the great news with your sponsors. I feel fortunate that each one of the companies I represent were not only understanding of my life decisions but also excited and encouraging! I believe in what each and every one of them stand for.”

“How Elite Athletes Qualify for Sanctionals in the 2019-2020 Season Is Already Changing,” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up

Now that CrossFit has released the full 2019-2020 Sanctionals season calendar we know when and where the 28 Sanctionals will be held.

The key question: How will Sanctionals handle the qualification process next season? What we know so far: Not a whole lot.

Norwegian CrossFit Championship: All athletes will be required to do the online qualifier.

Brazil CrossFit Championship: Athletes will qualify through the 2019-2020 CrossFit Open.

CrossFit Atlas Games: Top 20 men and women at the 2019 CrossFit Games will be invited to compete. There will be 10 spots allotted to those invited athletes. The remaining 30 spots will be earned through their online qualifier. Elite teams can bypass online qualifier by winning one of a handful of regional competitions.

Wodapalooza: Invites will be granted to top 20 men and women at the 2019 CrossFit Games, top 30 worldwide in the 2019 CrossFit Open, individual podium finisher in the last five years, previous Wodapalooza winner in the last five years, and previous Sanctionals winner from 2018-2019 season. For Teams: Top 10 teams at the 2019 CrossFit Games, top five finisher from 2019 Wodapalooza, and previous Sanctional winner from 2018-2019 season. The remaining spots will be earned via the online qualifier.

Down Under CrossFit Championship: Athletes and teams will qualify through the 2019-2020 CrossFit Open. Athletes will be ranked off their worldwide position and teams will be ranked by the three highest scored athletes.
