Froning V Fraser

Happy Friday! It’s Thursday, August 4, and this is your Morning Chalk Up. Did we miss something? Send us a tip at [email protected].

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Typically the worlds best athletes are minimalists when it comes to their training. They work hard and fast with few exercises. They master the fundamentals and work with them for years. This is the secret that no one wants to hear.”- Greg Glassman, Founder of CrossFit

In case you missed itThe 2016 CrossFit Games archives.

10 Seconds with Tia Toomey –“It has been a great experience, meeting and learning about all the different sports and the discipline they require. I haven’t felt better, the games was a great warm up for this event and I’m feeling good.”

Froning: Tired of the Froning v Fraser — First, we love Rich Froning; what’s not to love? But if you’re going to be Michael Jordan, you need to be prepared to hear about MJ v Kobe. In Froning’s own words: “We’re around 2 weeks out from the CrossFit Games and I’m already tired of the Fraser/Froning comparisons. To do that I think is incredibly disrespectful to what Mathew Fraser worked for this year, and in all honesty you’re comparing apples to oranges. Every year is its own unique test, and is hard to compare to the year before. What Mat did this year was nothing short of amazing and impressive to watch. For those calling for my return to individual I’m going to go ahead and tell you that won’t happen…”

Meet the Fittest Master Female on EarthRockTape sat down with Mary Beth Litsheim, the fittest grandma on the planet, to talk diet, training, and staying healthy enough to compete at the highest level. Not only is she a CrossFit coach but she teaches PE at a middle school in Grand Junction, Colorado. “My coach, Nick Fowler and the team of coaches at Brute Strength did all my programming. Intensity was the key! I do not diet, but I do eat very clean nutritionally. Lots of veggies, some fruit, lean meat, good fats, and good complex carbohydrates. I endeavor to eat fats, carbs, and protein every time I eat. Fighting gravity at this age takes a clean diet☺”

Reflections of a Games Rookie Ian Berger of CrossFit Dynamix, who just completed his first year at the CrossFit Games, recaps his experience day-by-day. “Teams didn’t start until 7 pm. I watched the individuals hit their events and tried to do everything possibly to distract me from the nerves. We got to the stadium and were lined up behind the warmup area. For what felt like forever, we waited with our vests on to be told what to do. Standing next to the likes ofRich Froning and other amazing athletes just added to the anxiety. We couldn’t leave the sidewalk, so athletes ran up to bushes or trees to release a nervous pee.

“When we finally were instructed to march down to the start line, I honestly didn’t want to. As we lined up, Dave Castro rode up on a motorcycle and stated: “This is going to be a flexible cap; it’s slightly different than what we tested so I will decide when it has been enough.” At that moment, I released exactly how much the Games were his show, and he could — and would — do whatever he liked.” Continue reading.

From Last to FourthCole Sage scored exactly 0 points on Event 2 and was sitting in last place overall after that event. “I was only able to keep a steadfast spirit going into the next event because I chose to not look at the leaderboard. I actually had no idea I had taken last place in that event, let alone was actually SITTING in last place overall. Because of this I was able to compete with peace of mind and attack the following events with my very best effort.”

WHAT THE ELITE ATHLETES ARE UP TO —
Kara Webb watched her dogs wrestle. Uneven bars not required for Bjork Odinsdottir to get gymnasty. Spend the day with Brooke Ence and Chris Hinshaw in Dubai. Carleen Mathews helps this 6 year old through his first Fran…modified of course. Elisabeth Akinwale is training for the 2017 Games. Recognize this garage gym? Yup, it’s the same one Ben Smith trained in, and here’s his younger brother Dane hitting some touch and go clean and jerks at 285 pounds. Brooke Wells and her sister Sydney sit down for Mark Bell’s Podcast.

WODing Through Cancer  David Wilcomes of New Jersey based CrossFit Paramus was diagnosed with prostate cancer last summer. Five days a week he’d undergo radiation treatment but never missed a class; David would wear his workout clothes so he could go to the box afterwards. He even completed the 2016 CrossFit Open with his daughter. Today, his cancer is in remission and he credits CrossFit: “Instead of sitting at home and thinking about it you’re with other people who were very supportive and very concerned.”

Another round of celebrities who love CrossFit: we’ll save you the ad-infused website and just tell you they are Malin Akerman, Paula Patton, Mallory Hagan, Tim McGraw, Bob Harper, Jessica Alba, and comedian Kevin Hart.

Speaking of Tim McGraw, apparently when he works out on the road the group starts at around 10-15, but then dwindles down to just 1-2 by the end. “It usually starts out with 10 or 15 people and about an hour and a half, two hours into it, it ends up being about five and then it finally dwindles down to one or two left…It’s a lot of CrossFit stuff. We use ropes and chains and all kinds of things and run a lot. I do a lot of cardio, that’s the main thing.”
