QUOTE OF THE DAY

Remember no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

The Iron Boy Runs 50 5Ks in 50 Days

The story.

When ten-year-old Niall McDermott watched the movie The Iron Cowboy he had an idea.

“I wanted to do 50 5K’s in 50 days,” he said.

Wait, he’s ten?

Niall’s grandfather was battling lung cancer, and so Niall decided he would use the runs to help him. So he started raising funds, his parents took him to a pediatrician to make sure this whole thing was safe, and Niall started planning his routes.

His first 5K was in Golden Gate Park. Then every day after that Niall just ran another 5K…for fifty straight days.

What a champ.

His parents were supportive but leery. His dad, Ryan McDermott, thought it was unlikely Niall would finish. “Ten-year-olds are fantastic, but they embark on a lot of things that they don’t finish,” he said.

But he did it. He finished. Niall’s 50th 5K was last Sunday. Niall and a friend from school joined a local swim-and-run competition to complete his 50th, and final, 5K.

Nothing like running with friends.

When asked what he thought when he finished, McDermott said, “I was thinking “I’m gonna finish this and I can do it, and when I finish it, I won’t have to do it anymore,” Niall said in an interview.

After all was said and done Niall raised $4,000 in donation pledges that will be donated to the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation in honor of his grandfather.

GAMES UPDATE

Heppner Out for Dubai CrossFit Championship

Jacob Heppner, who placed third in the online qualifier, declined his invitation to compete at the championship in Dubai this December. The three-time CrossFit Games athlete cited work conflicts as the reason for declining. Heppner is a project manager for a web development company.

A fan favorite, Heppner took the 2017 season off to rehabilitate an injury. Then in 2018, he failed to qualify for the Central Regionals after he posted a 1788th place finish on 18.4.

As per Dubai CrossFit Championship’s rules, Heppner’s invitation will be extended to the next in line and his $3,000 third place prize purse will also be forfeited. Heppner would have collected at least $4000 in total prize money between the online qualifier and a last place finish in Dubai.

Samuel Cournoyer and Lukas Hogberg have also declined their invitations.

Dubai CrossFit Championship is Shaping Up — Director of the Dubai CrossFit Championship, Saud Al Shamsi, went on the Mind Muscle Project podcast and shared some insight on this year’s event, “We’ve been running this for seven years now and this year is the most exciting year. With the names we have, the operations we have, the sponsors we have, its much bigger than any other.

“This year we bumped up the prize money…We want every athlete to have this experience. We don’t want any athlete to pay out of his pocket…We’re proud to make it even easier for all qualifiers to come over to Dubai.

“We are 100% a CrossFit event, we are following all of their rules. Anyone that is bad with them is bad with us. So (athletes that have failed drug tests) are not invited or allowed to do the qualifiers…Hopefully next year or the year after we’ll be starting the Masters division.

“Why a World-Renowned Sports Doctor Recommends CrossFit for High School Athletes,” by Dr. Kevin Stone, Stack.com

To be a high school recruit in any major sport, you have to play that sport year-round.

This statement has been the dogma for many youthful athletes during the past 10 years. Those of us who treat high schoolers, and counsel their worried parents, talk endlessly about the old days of three-sport athletes. Those were days of building well-rounded attitudes, not just bodies; of decreasing injuries by reducing exposure to repeated impacts and by developing varied athletic skills.

We have mostly failed to bring the three-sport athlete into the modern day. In high school, many serious athletes train year-round in their single sport. An inner-city kid, from a mediocre school, with limited financial or parental support, often believes that their only path to economic and academic freedom is the college sports recruiter. To get his attention, you’d better be big, strong and a starter. Single-focus dedication appears to be the only way forward.

While single-sport athletes appear to be the new norm, CrossFit (and a few of its imitators) may be able to counteract some of the drawbacks inherent in playing one sport year round. While no training program substitutes for the wide-ranging benefits of playing multiple sports, some of the missing attributes can be obtained by these novel, multi-faceted training programs.
