In CrossFit Dover’s Student Fitness League the Kids Are Alright
|
The story.
George Dobbins, owner of CrossFit Dover in Delaware, has developed and trademarked a program called the Student Fitness League.
The purpose of the Student Fitness League is to create a sense of belonging through teamwork and exercise and to compete against peers. “We focus on leadership, selflessness, and accountability. Every kid leaves here with a sense of being a leader,” Dobbins told us.
We love that.
CrossFit Dover started to test the program out back in 2016 when Dobbins noticed a need in the community for students to feel like they belonged to something bigger than themselves. He wanted to offer them something that taught them they hold value in their community. What better way to do that than with functional fitness.
And that’s just what happened with one Student Fitness League graduate Kiegan, who grew up playing Pop Warner football until he was diagnosed with pediatric fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder that caused him to have to be homeschooled because he couldn’t withstand the school day and also the rigors of physical therapy.
That’s rough.
Kiegan’s mother heard about the Student Fitness League at CrossFit Dover. After the second week, Kiegan hit a wall, but his league teammates saw him through it, encouraging him to keep trying. It worked. After a three-year absence from school, Kiegan is now back to earning A’s and B’s, taking on leadership roles, and planning for a future in student physical therapy, specializing in inclusivity, teamwork, and encouragement just like he experienced in CrossFit Dover’s Student Fitness League.
All the feels, Kiegan. All the feels.
Student Fitness League is currently being offered to middle school students with plans in the works for high school students. The program runs for six weeks at a time, training two evenings each week with league competitions on Saturday.

Katrin Davidsdottir on Why She Chose Fittest in Cape Town –– “We started by asking ourselves what month would be the best for us to compete in order to recover from the games, work on our weaknesses and then get into competition shape. Our pick: February. Then we looked into what competitions were then and it was either London or Cape Town and while both are super attractive I have never been to South Africa, I would love to get a couple weeks in the sun with some heat and I have heard so many amazing things about there from all different places! It’s an opportunity I couldn’t resist!”
An Oldie but a Goodie — We just recently re-discovered this interview with Greg Glassman on The Future of Fitness with Lewis Howes from 2016. It’s full of Glassman wisdom, including a plug for the shift towards CrossFit Health in HQ that we just saw pan out earlier this year.
— “The allure and the charm of CrossFit doesn’t draw [members] in. What brings them in is the young lady, the young man or that grandma or grandpa thats gotten results and will not shut up about CrossFit…There’s a lot of magic there.
— “For all those people that think business is about making money, that’s not the kind of business I am interested in…The universe doesn’t care if you want money but if you pursue excellence it’s like a beacon, it’s a lighthouse, you can see it. There’s easy agreement and easy recognition of something outstanding. Excellence shines bright and it’s obvious to everyone, it’s so non-elusive. Every day work towards that excellence, and you’ll know you’re making steps…you can feel it…And here’s what markets do. Markets move the money to the excellence, and almost always by a path that you would’nt have figured out.
— “One thing that I am most proud of that most people don’t know about, is our impact on the women in our community it’s a current hot button for me. I am amazed, too, at how much it’s gone unnoticed…it’s liberation from a devastating, deadly culture, and the other thing is…chronic disease. We have an elegant solution to the world’s greatest problem and that’s chronic disease. The HQ team has re-committed, we’re doubling down, to change the world’s perception of what happens in the box. That is way more important than the fitness. The fitness is a Trojan horse delivering wellness. It’s our job now to get that message out.“

“Different Scale, Same Goal for Injured Athletes in Omaha,” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up
Last fall, QLI decided they wanted to reimagine accessible fitness for their patients. QLI is an Omaha-based nonprofit that provides unmatched post-hospital rehabilitation for people with brain and/or spinal cord injuries. They care for individuals with everything from Parkinsons to Gillian-Barre to spinal cord injuries.
So in October, Steph Roob, Director of Nutritional Services for QLI Omaha, reached out to Stacie Tovar about starting a CrossFit program specifically for patients at their facility.
Tovar was on board right away. “Our vision is to tie fitness together, to help them long term, and to tie the community together through fitness,” she told us in a phone interview.
That’s what it’s all about.
After months of planning and coordinating, they kicked off the program at CrossFit Omaha in June. Two of CrossFit Omaha’s coaches go out to the QLI facility, twice a week for three hours. “The same coach goes every time for the 12 weeks each program runs. We know their needs, their wants, goals and background,” Tovar said.
Program attendance has more than doubled since the launch and patients are seeing the same kind of success as everday CrossFitters across the globe.
