How Elite Athletes Qualify for Sanctionals in the 2019-2020 Season Is Already Changing

Now that CrossFit has released the full 2019-2020 Sanctionals season calendar we know when and where the 28 Sanctionals will be held.

The key question: How will Sanctionals handle the qualification process next season?

What we know so far: Not a whole lot.

  • Norwegian CrossFit Championship: All athletes will be required to do the online qualifier.

Brazil CrossFit Championship: Athletes will qualify through the 2019-2020 CrossFit Open.

  • CrossFit Atlas Games: Top 20 men and women at the 2019 CrossFit Games will be invited to compete. There will be 10 spots allotted to those invited athletes. The remaining 30 spots will be earned through their online qualifier. Elite teams can bypass online qualifier by winning one of a handful of regional competitions.
  • Wodapalooza: Invites will be granted to top 20 men and women at the 2019 CrossFit Games, top 30 worldwide in the 2019 CrossFit Open, individual podium finisher in the last five years, previous Wodapalooza winner in the last five years, and previous Sanctionals winner from 2018-2019 season. For Teams: Top 10 teams at the 2019 CrossFit Games, top five finisher from 2019 Wodapalooza, and previous Sanctional winner from 2018-2019 season. The remaining spots will be earned via the online qualifier.
  • Down Under CrossFit Championship: Athletes and teams will qualify through the 2019-2020 CrossFit Open. Athletes will be ranked off their worldwide position and teams will be ranked by the three highest scored athletes.

Worth noting: Not a single Sanctional so far has explicitly stated they will offer a wildcard invite.

CrossFit Announces Summit for 10+ Year Affiliate Owners

Monday night, in the Email of the Day, CrossFit announced it is planning a get-together for all affiliates that have been open for more than ten years. The summit will take place in September in Whistler, British Columbia.

  • Beginning in 2009: “The fitness industry was dominated by globo gyms, exercise fads, and an oversubscription business model where no one was getting fit. Sport and health sciences were subjugated by two wholly corrupt professional organizations masquerading as academic disciplines.”
  • A Celebration of Lifeboats: “In order to understand, honor, and celebrate the extraordinary changes that have taken place in fitness and health over the past 10 years, CrossFit, Inc., has invited all 10-year (and older) affiliates to join us at a special event in their honor this September in Whistler, British Columbia.”
  • What They’ll Do: “We intend to listen, to learn, and to take pride in what they have achieved, individually and collectively. We’ll take stock, celebrate, and lay the groundwork for the next 10 years, for our greatest challenges and achievements stand before us.”

Stat de jure: There are now more than 800 ten-year plus affiliates.

What they’re saying:

  • CJ Martin, CrossFit Invictus in San Diego, CA: “Sounds like an awesome opportunity to swap war stories, share information and learn from other owners. Surviving 10 years as a business owner in any industry is impressive, so any chance to chop it up with a group who has done so is exciting.”
  • Craig Howard, Diablo CrossFit in Pleasant Hill, CA: “I’m excited for the opportunity to offer input to the future of CrossFit and grateful to be recognized by CrossFit for our continuing commitment. Whistler is gorgeous. The affiliate landscape is changing. Global expansion is fantastic but veteran affiliates have challenges that are much different than new affiliates. CrossFit needs to hear our thoughts, concerns and success stories. Every time I get together with my affiliate peers, I gain valuable knowledge and affirmation, and the 10 year gathering is a great way to get us re-energized and sharing experiences.”
  • Benjamin Norman, CrossFit Adelaide in Welland, Australia: “Tickets booked, super excited to be making the trek from Oz for this.”

Heads up: Some affiliates said they didn’t receive an email. If that’s you, request info by emailing [email protected]

Nursing an Injury and Training — If you are nursing an injury, make sure you’re getting enough of the right types of nutrients.

— “What you need to eat actually depends on what type of injury you experienced. However, a quality overall diet is of the utmost importance. If you are not stocking up on healthy, nutrient dense foods throughout the day, then your ability to recover will be much harder.”

“The ‘Ones to Watch’ from Australia at the Crossfit Games 2019,” by Brittney Kleyn, Morning Chalk Up

Ever wondered what’s in the water down under?

Producing the likes of the Fittest Women on Earth, Tia Clair Toomey and Kara Saunders (Webb), the Australians have certainly cemented a stronghold of the women’s competition at the CrossFit Games.

The Aussie Men are yet to assert such dominance and even got a bad wrap when rookie Ricky Garard was stripped of his third place finish in 2017, testing positive to banned substances testolone and endurobol.

2019 could mark the resurgence of the rookie with two young guns hoping to shake off the stigma and bring the boys up to speed.

“You don’t not go to the Games to win, so I am going to go there and try make a name for myself,” Matt McLeod told the Morning Chalk Up.

The 26 year old qualified through his dominant performance at the Down Under CrossFit Championship in May, beating fellow qualifier and Games athlete Jacob Heppner, to take out the top spot.

“I definitely want to go there and scare a few people,” he laughed.

“When I’m competing I think about nothing else.”

McLeod isn’t a newbie on the Australian CrossFit circuit, being on the cusp at the Pacific Regionals for the past three years.

“I’ve been trying for a while now and it’s good to have it all happen,” he said.

It’s been six years since he first tried CrossFit, with a background in competitive swimming and boxing.

“I’ve always been like a very late bloomer in terms of my sporting like I always hit my peak late in swimming, very late, boxing was the same, took me a few years,” McLeod added.
