Lowlands Preview: From Sint Gone Bad to CrossFit Semifinal
More than 10 years ago at CrossFit Twente, 43 athletes from all over Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands performed 3 workouts on one day in front of 100 spectators.
This first edition of what was then called ‘Sint Gone Bad’, was a small but successful event where the love for CrossFit was shared and successes were celebrated.
Equipment was gathered from all over the country and judges and volunteers were mostly members of the organizing boxes.Today the Lowlands Throwdown is one of ten Semifinals happening around the world and will qualify five men, five women, and five teams to the 2021 NoBull CrossFit Games. Needless to say, the competition has come a long way.
When it comes to Games veterans in the field there are actually quite a few, however, only three of the nine men and three of the nine women who have competed at the Games, had any Games experience before the past two seasons (in which the qualification processes were very different from what we had before, and have again, in 2021).
Week three of the 2021 CrossFit Games Semifinals includes three events this weekend: the CrossFit Lowlands Throwdown, the CrossFit German Throwdown, and the Brazil CrossFit Championship. All three are virtual and won’t have livestreams. Here’s a quick guide to help you follow all the action.
The West Coast Classic, the final in-person Semifinal of the 2021 CrossFit Games season released another individual event yesterday:
CrossFit Training and Education is now publishing a monthly email called the “The Professional Coach.” The first edition was released yesterday and if you’re not on the mailing list yet, here’s a recap.
Steph Hammer, adaptive Nike athlete and adaptive CrossFit pioneer, was featured on Nike Training’s Instagram yesterday. She demonstrated how seated adaptive athletes can perform burpees.
The CrossFit German Throwdown Highlights Previous Games Champs and a New Generation of Contenders
The third weekend of Semifinals action is here, and unique to this weekend is the fact that all the participating events will be held virtually due to ongoing restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, and all of the events will have standardized programming provided by the CrossFit Games team.
The Europe continent is split into two Semifinals, the German Throwdown and Lowlands Throwdown, following a similar trend from the old Regionals format in 2018 when European athletes were filtered into either the Europe or Meridian Regionals due to a continued increase in participation thanks to the successes of superstars like Annie Thorisdottir, Katrin Davidsdottir, Sara Sigmundsdóttir, Kristin Holte, and Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson.
What’s At Stake
The German Throwdown will host one half of the European contingent that has placed an individual athlete on the podium every year since 2009, but has failed to yield a podium finisher in the Affiliate Cup since its inception.
The Best in South America Competing for Coveted Games Invitations at Brazil CrossFit Championship
Six automatic 2021 NOBULL CrossFit Games invitations are on the line this weekend for the athletes competing at the Brazil CrossFit Championship on June 11-13. The online Semifinal will send the top two individual men, women and teams to Madison, WI to represent South America.
What’s on the line: Along with a Games invite, the top-five finishers in each division will take home prize money from a total prize purse of $45,000 USD. Individual athletes who finish 3-5 earn a spot to the Last Chance Qualifier that will be held online June 28-July 4.
First – $5,000
Second – $4,000
Third – $3,000
Fourth – $2,000
Fifth – $1,000
Who to watch: The Semifinal features the top athletes from South America including many who have appeared at the Games. If the Semifinals mirror the continent’s Quarterfinals, look for some close battles for those Games invites across all three divisions.
Another Way to Follow the Semifinals this Weekend (A Little Unconventionally)
With COVID forcing all three Semifinal events this weekend online, fans won’t be able to follow along with a livestream in the conventional fashion. Instead, fans can either tune into the post-production live commentary on the CrossFit Games website, or they can follow along with their favorite athletes via social media.
But with so many athletes competing for CrossFit Games tickets this weekend, it can be tough to keep track of who to follow and where. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the social media accounts you should be following this weekend to keep up with all the action.
