How to Watch 20.3 + Expert Predictions

 

Two down, three to go, and the second week of the Open was a week full of firsts. It was the first time thrusters have shown up before the final week, and for the first time ever we ditched the barbell and opted for some dumbbell thrusters instead. For the seventh time in Open history, 20 minutes was the prescribed duration, and it tested our mental focus as well as our fitness.

For the second week in a row we’ve got an announcement in the land down under, as an Australian sanctional will once again play host alongside the very first Open announcement in Norway. Following a year where a Norwegian individual made the CrossFit Games podium for the first time, they’ll get to play host to an Open announcement, before hosting their first Sanctional event as well later this year. In week two LoFranco rebounded strong from a week one shutout to bring things back to almost level, and below are the updated results from our expert picks.

Brandon Domingue: 3-3 (1-1 in week 2)
Tommy Marquez: 2-4 (1-1 in week 2)
Justin LoFranco: 2-4 (2-0 in week 2)

Kristen Holte vs. Nico Billaudel, Matilde Garnes vs. Rebecka Vitesson Presented by the Norwegian CrossFit Championship

  • Location: CrossFit Gamlebyen – Oslo, Norway
  • Start time: Livestream will start at 4:15 PM PST, which is 1:15 AM local time on October 25. 
  • How to watch: The livestream will be hosted on the NCC YouTube and Facebook pages as well as the Games page. 
  • Background: An intriguing double feature in Norway. The first is a matchup of Norway’s finest from 2019, as the 2nd fittest woman on earth Kristen Holte takes on Nico Billaudel, Norway’s national champion on the men’s side. Holte is a 6-time CrossFit Games athletes, while Billaudel made his rookie debut in 2019 as the first Norwegian man to make the Games where he finished 40th.

Davidsdottir Joins Sport Champions in Empowering Women in Sports

 

The two-time CrossFit Games champion, Katrin Davidsdottir, joined more than a dozen female leaders in sport at the espnW Women + Sports Summit. In its 10th year, the summit unites world-class female athletes and business leaders to work towards creating more opportunities for women in sports across the globe. 

On the World Class Athlete Panel:

  • Liz Cambage, WNBA All-Star and single game scoring record holder
  • Becky Lynch, WWE Raw women’s champion
  • Katrin Davidsdottir
  • Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Olympic gold medalist in 100m

Some key exchanges: 

  • Davidsdottir: “When we fail, there’s nothing wrong with it. You just failed at that particular event; you’re not a failure.”
  • Fraser-Pryce: “I earned this and I want this just as anybody else. It’s hard being an athlete from a country that’s so male-dominated…that’s a testament to knowing who you are and knowing what you’re worth. For me, I want to do it the way I want to do it and I want to do it well.” 
  • Lynch on discovering wrestling: “For the first time in my life, I wanted to be good at something. I wanted to be better at something.”
  • Sage Steele, moderating: “Sometimes as women, we don’t credit ourselves enough.”
  • A wrestler to Lynch: “Move more like a girl.” Lynch, responding: “Well I am a girl, and I’m moving, so I don’t know what that means.” 
  • Cambage: Growing up “I tried to shrink myself. We were born this way. We were born beautiful. We were born this way to live this life.”

One big thing: Davidsdottir’s presence at the event was a win for the CrossFit Games, and Davidsdottir herself echoed that sentiment in a post-panel interview.

“Open Hashtags Build an Even Stronger CrossFit Community,” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up 

Ask any athlete out there, elite or not, what they love about CrossFit and most of them will say, “the community.” The Open, in its tenth iteration this year, is that community’s time to shine.

With customizable leaderboards, this year athletes can choose to compete with specific groups within the broader community and some of these sub-communities are taking full advantage of the Open.

Master’s athletes: Helen Harding, who took first place in Women’s 40-44 in 2017, runs an Instagram account called The Masters Movement. She’s highlighting athletes from all Master’s division each week.

Harding is making a “comprehensive recap of the Open and a rundown of each age group every week for the next five weeks for the Masters divisions.”  She told Morning Chalk Up she’s enjoying getting to know more about Masters athletes everywhere in the process.

James Free Jr. is a founding member of the Masters Fitness Collective, a group that’s working to bring Masters athletes from all over the world together.

“We just did our first live stream of an open for Master’s Athletes. We had Dave Hippensteel, Ron Ortiz, April Lowe, and Linda Elstun go head to head at Power Monkey Camp as well as Dave Durante and Chad Vaughn,” Free told us.

The Masters Fit Collective “are also live streaming the rest of the open announcements.  [Week 2] is Nick Urankar and Kevin Jones in South Bend, Week 3 is In NJ, Week 4 will be at multiple spots and week 5 is a surprise,” Free said.
