QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” — John C. Maxwell

Hunter McIntyre Does Regionals

What’s happening?

Morning Chalk Up and FITAID are teaming up to present “Hunter McIntyre Does Regionals” live on Facebook starting on Sunday, July 22. Hunter McIntyre is the champion obstacle course racer who’s been cleaning up the OCR circuit even against some of CrossFit’s fittest athletes.

But he’s not just all about running and climbing over obstacles, the champ finished 216th in the West Region with a 4th place finish in WOD #1. Not too shabby.

The backstory.

During Tough Mudder X back in June, Hunter told Patrick Vellner and Jacob Heppner that he could have qualified for the CrossFit Games if he’d been competing at the 2018 South Regional.

Patrick and Jacob said ‘ain’t gonna happen’ and called his bluff. Now Hunter is heading out to Jacob’s homebase at Cobra Command CrossFit in Basehor, KS for three days to take on Regionals and settle this debate once and for all.

Plus, Jacob Heppner will be joining him for a few of the workouts.

…and this will be live right?

Duh. FITAID and Morning Chalk Up are tag teaming the live stream for your viewing pleasure. But we need you to do two things first: 1). RSVP on our event page (no one likes throwing a party for one) and 2). Turn on your Facebook live notifications (instructions below).

Step 1. Go here.

Step 2. Click the three little dots in the upper right hand corner and select “Turn on live notifications.”

Step 3: Sit back and let us deliver you awesome content.

Get an AED in Your CrossFit Box

Background.

January 4th, 2016 started like any other day in any other CrossFit box. But at CrossFit Excess in Vandalia, OH 59-year-old Dale Cornett was on the ground, mid-workout, having a heart attack.

What happened?

Sadly, CrossFit Excess had no AED in the gym and Dale didn’t make it, leaving behind a wife of 25 years and two children. People had called him an “exercise enthusiast.” He took ballroom dancing with his wife and was a committed member of CrossFit Excess. All signs pointed to healthy. Until they didn’t.

That’s so sad.

An AED machine could possibly have saved Dale’s life. One machine can save a life any day, during any WOD, at any box. However, many gyms can’t afford them. Now, in honor of Dale, CrossFit Excess hosts an AED fundraiser every year.

That’s a great cause.

In their first year, they raised enough money to purchase one AED machine for their gym and also to donate a second machine. Now, all funds go directly to getting AEDs in gyms that don’t have one and so far they’ve donated three in Dale’s name to gyms across Ohio.

On July 21st, they’re holding their 3rd annual AED fundraiser. This year they hope to raise enough to donate three AED to boxes this year. Each AED unit costs $1075.00 with the wall mount case costing $255.00. Accounting for shipping, the total for three AED sets comes to roughly $4,500.00. The three gyms that have received these AEDs, CrossFit Unashamed, Revival Fitness, and a non-profit fitness center in Cleveland, are also doing the Dale WOD and holding fundraisers.

Coffee Break Conversations

What to tell your coach who missed all the sweet deals on Amazon Prime Day…

You missed nothing because Amazon couldn’t keep up. Amazon hyped the event for days and was projected to bring in $3.4B over the course of the 36-hour sale. But the site crashed from the start, leaving many shoppers staring at Dogs of Amazon. Seeing as how every minute the site was down the company lost $1.57 million in potential sales, that’s one expensive puppy.

What to tell your coach who now has an extra hundred bucks to spend…

To celebrate the 2018 CrossFit Games, CrossFit is giving away copies of “2017 Games: Photography of the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games.” No fail puppies here, just spend $75 on gear you know you need anyway and they’ll throw in the book for free. Done and done.

Bacon makes anything better, just like this chicken burrito. Swap out that tortilla for a bacon weave. No one said it would be easy, but it will be worth it.

CrossFit Games Event Page Updated — The CrossFit Games event page was updated yesterday to show the first day of events is now Wednesday, August 1. Still no event details released.

Here’s a look back at the past four years of CrossFit Games, their start day and the number of events on Day’s 1 and 2:

2017 — Games started on Thursday

2016 — Wednesday two events, one event Thursday

2015 — Wednesday two events, no events Thursday

2014 — Wednesday two events, no events Thursday

2013 — Wednesday two events, no events Thursday

CrossFit Classes at School — Every week for the past eight years at Willits High School, students, faculty, and community members rise in the early morning hours to workout at 5:30 a.m. Principal Mike Colvig even became a CrossFit instructor to validate his coaching skills and to make sure he taught it correctly. He also wanted to be an affiliate of Crossfit, so that they could use the name. The Willits High School CrossFit program is run by donations which are used to purchase new equipment for the
athletic center.

An Early Love for CrossFit — Taylor Niece is only eight-years-old and already in love with CrossFit. She trains at Streamline Fitness in Cedar Park, TX. She’s happiest when she’s in the gym with her coaches and already sees the value CrossFit has added to her life. “I feel like I can set a goal. Like if you’re going to be a gymnast, you can set a goal like I’m going do this today. If you’re a writer, you can say I’m going write
one page today. You can set goals no matter what your passion is,” said Niece.

She Finally Gets There — Michele Fumagalli has had her eyes on the Games since discovering CrossFit in college. In 2015 she came close, finishing seventh at Central Regional. Since then, she’s gotten a second college degree and had a daughter. But this year she did it, placing fourth at Central Regional and securing her spot in Madison.

Reebok President on Partnering With CrossFit — “When you first signed the deal with CrossFit, did you realize what that movement would become?”

Matt O’Toole : “It was very small at the time, and people rightly thought, ‘Why are you guys giving this little thing so much attention?’ But having experienced it and visited a lot of CrossFit gyms that were around back then, we saw that this is where [fitness] is going. We live in a world where we’re hyperconnected digitally, but in a lot of ways, we’re longing for some physical
connection. We want to look someone in the eyes and be physically together and work out, and we saw with CrossFit that that was going
to be the magic of the whole experience.”

CHALK UP READS

“Dear Bully” by Alyssa Ritchey, Morning Chalk Up

Dear Erin Dale Carr,

I hope one day your little girl or boy doesn’t get bullied or teased, by you or others, because they look different. I pray one day that you understand a woman/man can look any way they desire as long as they truly love themselves for who they are.

I love being strong, sexy and defined. It’s flattering. I am completely secure and in love with the way I look. But it’s not the way I look that I am completely in love with.

It’s how strong I am that I am more in love with. The defined muscles just come along with the process. I am who I am because I built my body to be like this. It took several years of sweat, tears and victories. And I am happy with my little sexy muscular body regardless of others opinions.

What’s not okay is that you are being a bully.

This could backfire on you. Not everyone is as secure with the way they look. If you were to ever say this to the wrong person and they hurt themselves, shame on you. People are beautiful inside and out regardless of what they look like. You have to see that. If you ever do, you will be set free of your hatred. I hope one day you are set free and see the different type of beautiful women and men in this world.

I hope one day you find the love in your heart to think before you speak. And If you cannot say a nice word then don’t say anything at all.

Alyssa.
