PROUD CROSSFIT DADS

A few days ago, Gary Watson emailed us sharing a story about his son Luke and it’s a story that just has to be shared.

“Following an accident in 2004 and complications [Luke] decided to undergo a below knee amputation in 2013. To encourage him to get active and get fit he joined us (Mum and Dad) at CrossFit Nottingham. The leg he had been given by the hospital wasn’t suited for CrossFit so the owners thought it would be a good idea to try and raise funds for a sports adapted leg. This idea took off and with the help of CrossFit Nottingham members and staff, several boxes throughout the UK and Chris Burton of Active Stills photography, the money was raised within a month and Luke got his new leg. He now trains at CrossFit Pontefract and is taking part in this years open.”

CHALK UP READS

At 6:00 a.m. the alarm goes off. But before even making a fresh pot of coffee, you head over to your bedside table to put on your 20kg vest.

Wait, a 20k weight vest? Yeah, it’s part of your routine. You wear it to work, to the grocery store, to the gym (Yes, Murph X every day), even to La Loma for date night. This is exactly what Zac Bradley of Penrith, Cumbria, UK is about to do. For the entire month of June, a 20kg weight vest will become his exterior shell for at least 12 hours a day. It will be his declaration of freedom.

In August of 2011, just six weeks after Zac had graduated from university, he sat in the waiting room at Cumberland Infirmary, stunned. He had just learned that he was diagnosed with a form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“So I Don’t Fit Your Feminine Ideal? Read This” by Miriam Krug, Gameplan A

You can’t please everyone. That’s a fact I can’t change. Yet a lot of people are trying to make me feel bad about my choices, and I won’t keep quiet anymore.

I can’t ignore it when someone calls me too bulky or manly, or asks if I still find myself pretty. For two years, I’ve been doing CrossFit and, since August 2016, I’ve been working out five to six times a week. My body has changed. I’ve never been stronger or felt better in my life. But I’ve also been getting negative comments from people because of my physique, so now I feel it’s time to address you, my “haters.”

It makes me incredibly happy to go to the gym every day, kick ass at the box, and go home with a smile on my face. Just because you think I look bulky, or someone else looks overweight to your standards, that doesn’t make it true.
It took me over seven years to finally accept my body. I am not – nor will I ever be – the woman with slim legs. I never felt comfortable in my body until I started CrossFit. When I now look into the mirror, I feel sexy and proud of myself.”
