STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?
“I used to be a runner, play flag football for 8 weekends, and occasionally go to the gym. While this may seem active, at home I would eat a large pizza to myself almost every night, smoke a pack of cigarettes every day and drinking at least 4 times a week. A friend told me about CrossFit and I signed up to see what was so cool and I was hooked instantly. Now I barely drink, quit smoking, eat healthier and am in the best shape of my life. I wish I started sooner!” — Motier Haskins, CrossFit Beyond in Albany, NY. CrossFitting for 3 years.

“Seven years ago…in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device ripped away the bottom half of his right leg.”

Kionte Storey was out in the back of CrossFit Del Mar with a dozen others, hammering away at a Hero WOD. A prosthetic athlete himself, Storey is on a mission to get as many prosthetics to those who need them.

“I love giving back and I love motivating people, so that became my purpose — and even the reason why I’m still alive today,” Storey told the Del Mar Times.

Every $400 he raises will pay for someone’s prosthetic. Next up, he and the Range of Motion Project are heading to Ecuador climb nearly 19,000 feet to the top of the Cayambe volcano. After that, they’re hitting Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The 2017 Lehigh Valley Sportsfest in Allentown, PA will feature an expanded CrossFit competition this year.
Five years ago with only 10 kids, Whaling City CrossFit held their first summer camp. This summer, the New Bedford, MA based CrossFit affiliate is packing in 20 kids per week and expanded to a second session. “When we think about CrossFit for kids we’re not really gearing it towards heavy lifting, like traditional CrossFit. We’re just aiming it towards getting them moving, burning energy, and having fun. We want to get them off the couch. That’s the important part,” says director and co-owner of Whaling City CrossFit, Tess Hedblom

“CrossFit Kids Research Brief: Added Sugar” by Jon Gary, CrossFit Journal

Make the best choice possible concerning what to eat in every situation.” At the CrossFit Specialty Course: Kids, this simple statement summarizes the recommended nutritional approach for youths from 3 to 18.

Practical applications are discussed along with expectations set to reflect the broad age range and a child’s relative inability to affect family decisions.

The first, best decision is to choose real foods over processed foods, as outlined in CrossFit’s basic nutritional prescription (1): meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. This prescription helps balance intake from all macronutrient classes, ensures adequate micronutrient content, limits overall carbohydrate consumption and eliminates added sugar from the diet.
