QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill

Is Your Booch Giving you Brain Fog?

Love your gut.

The more we learn about health and wellness, the more we want to take care of our bodies (and our guts). That’s why so many people are on the probiotic train — they’ve become as common in our diets lately as protein powder. You can find us snacking on yogurt, sipping on kombucha, and taking supplements daily. But could they be hurting instead of helping?

Say it aint so. Your Kombucha is a heartbreaker.

A team of gastroenterologists from Augusta University in Georgia think so. They recently did a study suggesting many people who supplement with probiotics daily might show symptoms like gas, diarrhea, and “brain fog”.

But how?

The normally friendly bacteria that you find in our favorite probiotic products (that’s meant to colonize the colon) scooch on over to the small intestine instead. The bacteria gorges themselves on the carbs from a recent meal and become fermenting machines creating an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.

This causes problems for folks with a condition called D-lactic acidosis, common in people whose small intestine has shrunk due to injury, disease, or bariatric surgery. (You science-y people can check out deets.)

Aw, shucks.

The good thing is that if you aren’t showing any of these signs like extreme bloating or brain fog, you’re in the clear.

Keep sippin’ on your favorite booch, and pour us a glass while you’re at it. And make sure it’s the hard stuff!

Three Female Coaches Walk into a Gym

The story.

Coaches Jessie Purcell, Kelly Lum and Alex Clark purchased CrossFit Staunton last week from the previous owner, Phil Lennon. Lennon started the box in 2013 and recently changed locations into a former car dealership. That’s when the three women took the opportunity to start a new chapter not only in their lives, but for the community that CrossFit Staunton created.

Friendly faces.

The three women have been coaching at CrossFit Staunton for a number of years;  Purcell for the past four years, Lum for the past two and Clark for the past year. “The people here are one in a million,” Purcell said, who has been the general manager for the past three years. “You will not find people like this anywhere else.”

New name.

Together they came up with a new LLC, called Strong Life. “We chose Strong Life because we thought that was a good header to what we wanted to accomplish here,” Purcell said. “It’s not just strong arms, a strong squat or different things like that. We want to make people strong in life, whether it is to handle really hard situations or it’s to carry that 50 pound bag of sand from Lowe’s and not have help.”

But the same mission.

But they won’t change much else. But the three say nothing major is going to change, they will only improve on fitness, classes and community.Their vision is to not only help those who walk into the box but the entire community.

CrossFit and community make you strong, Lum said. “It’s not just making your muscles bigger, it’s getting strong. Not only strong physically, but strong spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, everything, whole body strong.”

Coffee Break Conversations

What to tell that over-the-top Dog Mom in your apartment complex the next time you hear her begging Princess to eat her dinner…

You make that yourself? Because if so, you might be robbing little Princess of important doggie nutrients. Lisa Freeman, veterinary nutritionist and professor of clinical nutrition at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, says “In the last few years I’ve seen more cases of nutritional deficiencies due to people feeding unconventional diets, such as unbalanced home-prepared diets, raw diets, vegetarian diets, and boutique commercial pet foods.” Maybe Princess just wants a good ol’ bowl of kibble.

How to respond the next time someone asks you to define functional fitness…

Have you seen this video? This mom uses CrossFit to help her be strong enough to carry her 90 pound special needs son in and out of her house, daily. If that’s not Mom Strong, we don’t know what is.

Things To…

  • FIRE DESTROYS CROSSFIT ARSENAL — On Tuesday, CrossFit Arsenal in Watertown, MA was devastated by a major fire which destroyed most of their building and equipment. help rebuild their facility.

Cole Sager on why the marathon row was his favorite CrossFit Games — “The Marathon Row was one heck of a grueling event. It was miserable…Yet oddly enough, when people asked me what my favorite event from the Games was, I found myself perking up to tell them about just how much I loved the Marathon Row…When we have the keys to success we must stay mentally engaged in order to make something great happen. I made the event into a game. I was the hunter. We all face daunting challenges in our lives. If we can simply prepare well, stay mentally engaged, and find ways to overcome obstacles, we will
be able to achieve things far greater than we or anyone around us expected.”

MUST READ: These 10 Simple Truths CrossFit Revealed to Me — “It had been almost 15 years since I had laced up my cleats for my last soccer game, but this Mom of 2 is one tough cookie. I was born a natural athlete, sports come easy to me. If it was athletic, I was guaranteed to win at it…Boy was I in for a surprise…I will never forget when a much older woman who is a smoker beat me in both deadlifts and the WOD in one day.

Needless to say, I began to get discouraged. It had been years since I had consistently trained, my body had changed and my mind was confused about it. The more I compared my current self to my past self the more I allowed negativity to take over my mind. This negativity discouraged me from trying my best and paved the way for indifference which gave me permission to stay the same.”

“Glassman: Dave is ‘the Director of the Games. Nothing’s changed,'” by Justin LoFranco, Morning Chalk Up

In an exclusive interview, when asked about Dave Castro’s role in this new direction for the CrossFit Games Greg Glassman said, “He’s the director of the Games. Nothing’s changed.”

Glassman went on to say, “Dave is the perfect person to execute on this vision, the perfect person. He and I are as close as we’ve ever been.”

Last week, Glassman outlined changes to the CrossFit Games season which included the elimination of Regionals and the Invitational, as well as new qualification requirements for Games athletes.

In 2007, Dave Castro started the CrossFit Games on his parents farm in Aromas, CA. Since then, it has grown worldwide, welcoming more than 560 athletes from 52 countries to compete in the 2018 CrossFit Games. In 2017, the most recent year we have data available, more than 60,000 spectators showed up in Madison, WI to watch athletes compete for the title Fittest on Earth.

Over the course of it’s 12 year history, Castro has had the painstaking responsibility of programming 129 individual Games events, weaving together adequate tests of fitness with a constantly improving fan experience.

As a result, the 2015, 2016 and 2017 CrossFit Games were nominated for multiple awards by SportsTravel Magazine include Best Event of the Year.
