INVITATIONAL INSIGHT
— WHY NO FRASER? Fans have missed out on the Fittest Man on Earth for two straight years. We reached out to see why Mat Fraser wasn’t competing at the 2017 CrossFit Invitational and his agent said, “Mat sustained an injury at the CrossFit Games this year. He wasn’t able to workout much at all for 6 to 8 weeks because he was in a brace recovering. He was just cleared and is fully healed now but just isn’t ready to compete. He’s just getting back to training.” What was the injury? He tore a ligament in his knee.
— GARARD RUMOR MILL: Last week, The Barbell Spin reported speculationthat Ben Garard (Ricky Garard’s brother) was a candidate to coach the Pacific Invitational team. We were curious so we asked CrossFit HQ and they confirmed Ben Garard was never a consideration.
WHAT TO TELL YOUR FRIEND WHO STARTS FALLING FOR THEIR HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART AGAIN…
Your first love is hard to forget, just ask Mark Gomes who came back to competitive Olympic Weightlifting after more than 30 years. In 1982, the 66-year-old decided to hang up his barbell but he rediscovered his passion for it after joining CrossFit Ottawa. Currently the masters athlete holds nine Ontario Masters records and three Canadian recording in both the snatch and clean and jerk. In 2018, Mark wants to recapturing the Pan-American title he held before some of us were even born. Talk about rekindling old flames.
WHAT TO TELL YOUR FRIEND WHO RAN OUT OF CHALK…
Chalk makes you stronger, which is why you need to keep a lot of it around. We know the feeling of walking over to the chalk bucket to find only one tiny crumb at the bottom right before you’re about to do Fran. No one wants that. Don’t let that happen again. Instead, talk to Chalk Monster who will ship premium grade chalk right to your door, or garage, monthly so you never run out. For reals though, it could be a life, or PR saver. #UnleashYourChalkMonster

STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?
“In 2008, I was involved in a major car accident that ended up breaking my spine and left me with an even worse addiction to pain meds. After bottoming out and getting sober in 2012 through a 12-step program, I walked into a box for the first time. Right away I knew that CrossFit was for me. CrossFit has helped me to see that I am not my injury or my addiction. It has given me even more purpose and direction. With the help of Phoenix Multisport I was able to get my L1 and started coaching.” — Keith Russell, Per Ignem 2 in Boston, MA
